You don't have a clue about my background. How dare you try to insult me under false pretences just because I disagree with some brat sticking the middle finger up to the very people that have allowed them to have a chance at succeeding.

Very insensitive of me? I was stating the obvious and sharing my opinion which was formed on fact, you on the other hand are trying to imply that somehow I must be better than Brenda just because I acknowledged her stupidity... interesting. Were you aware that she spent ~£300 on unnecessary clothes, placing herself into a poor financial situation. Also, she didn't even bother to make an effort to attend lectures etc so don't try to tell me that this is because EMA has been cut. Would she have used the EMA for her education, or just hosed it away like she did with her other money?

Just going to cut in and say EMA (when i was in college 2yrs ago) is given in arrears. You had to have about 85% attendance or you would not receive it the following week so even if she was entitled to it she would not have received any.

How do you know she never mentioned it on the show or to her tutors? She could have easily said it and the producers just edited it out or something.

I had extreme insomnia whilst I was at uni and it affected me in the exact same way as it did with Brenda. It really does affect your whole mood and would explain her not turning up to lectures (I did the same thing). Obviously it's not an EXCUSE but I definitely think she is telling the truth about it and it makes a lot more sense.

I'm not doubting the severity of insomnia, I'm doubting her honesty. What do the producers have to gain from editing that kind of detail out? The fact is, we saw her saying she had no reason for missing her lectures in that chat with her tutor. She said she didn't like early mornings but never once mentioned insomnia.

As I said you don't know that she never mentioned the insomnia. Like I said the producers could have edited it out. I don't know exactly what they would've gained, but to me it seems like they were trying to exaggerate all of the characters/stories on the show. It's for entertainment after all.

Also you gotta remember that these people were filmed everyday for three months, and we only saw little snippets of each person. There's bound to be many, many things they producers left out - if not for the sake of entertainment, then for the sake of time lol.

I don't doubt her honesty about the insomnia as her whole behaviour on the show was exactly the behaviour of someone with insomnia. The depression seems accurate too as often the two go hand in hand.

The whole point of the show was to show people the 'secret life' of university students. Channel 4/RAW Productions doesn't give two hoots about her insomnia/pregnancy (and miscarriage)/racial abuse. It wouldn't catch the eye of people. Same with the Troy situation, Channel 4/RAW wanted to make it look like that Brenda had never met Troy and that she asked a 'complete' stranger to give her £500. The reason why they would do this is to draw people into watching it and to get them talking.

I agree- I cringed so much in that episode where Brenda and Troye talked 'for 5 hours' so Channel 4 certainly did acheive what they set out to do which was to exaggerate the small nuances of the students to make the show more interesting. The way they edited the show made it look as though they were moving into this relationship realllyyy fast like one moment they had met on twitter and BAMN! shes begging for money XD

Also the financial side; she never got paid her loan until October but she had already been in contact with the SU at Leicester who told her not to pay anything until she got her grant which was in January - again the TSLOS producers forgot to mention that.

After reading her blog, her tweets and the interviews with some of the students participated; it shows the producers only showed the footage that would 'appealed' to upcoming students so Freshers, socialising, finance, relationships, sex and studying.

I found Brenda's blog if anyone is interested:

http://curlycomediana.blogspot.co.uk/?m=1

Gives quite an alternative to how the show portrays her.

Ow man this is so sad :frown: Lesson from : Reality tv fame is a dangerous game.

Surely factors like insomnia, and especially pregnancy and miscarriage, would make the programme more interesting though? I think they would 'catch the eye' of people more than just making her look like a lazy, self absorbed cow.

Producers do warp things. But I think issues like insomnia and pregnancy are too juicy to deliberately miss out if they're trying to draw up interest and entertainment.

Well you would think that but clearly they didn't

But whatever their reasoning for the footage that got aired; it didn't really show the point of these documentary. But people on social media didn't understand this and were big meanies - the students on the show can and do read these tweets.

The only person that I think they never really bothered with and kept most of the footage in was Tanya. But then again, the only reason why Tanya was added to the show was so they could have a 'diverse' mixture of students. But then again nearly 1 in 3 of all undergraduates are mature students (21 and over). My university's student ratio (mature and school leavers/gap year) is 54:46
Tweeted about Brenda off the show, and she replied back, very awkward aha.
Did the pregnancy happen prior to January though? As the series ended at the end of semister 1 so they wouldn't have filmed it if anything happened after then.

What did you say? And what did she say? Just curious

I said, "Brenda is NOT serious" (before the whole panic attack fiasco) referring to her being late for lectures.
And she replied back saying, "Well you obviously don't know my life then"
I said, "no I don't "
And she replied, "well passing judgement on 15 mins of my life shown in 1 hour is quiet silly don't you think ?"

I finally replied back saying, "well, this is my personal opinion of the 15 mins of your life shown in 1 hour, if it offends you then apologies"

- Granted I didn't know that she had had a miscarriage or suffered from insomnia until she tweeted it after my tweet and Troy had been defending her.
