Netflix at uni... Is it worth it?

Scroll to see replies

*How much money do you have to spend?
*Do you think you/your parents spend £7.99 or (most likely) more on the TV you watch? - I mean things like a Sky subscription, not including actual TV licence
* What would you actually be missing - shows that you love watching or just being able to watch as many TV shows as you like?
* Does Netflix hold the shows you actually watch? Do other free (and preferably legal) sites like BBC Iplayer and 4OD play them?

It's really personal preference. I know for me, Netflix would be a waste; I don't watch TV often, never had a big range of channels and programmes to choose from anyway, I'm not one of those people who watch four seasons of a show in a night (I don't mean this pretentiously, I have other ways of procrastination ), and it would take up a big portion of my income. If you have a spare £8 and really think you'll miss it, then its really not that bad of a deal if you're a heavy TV show watcher.

Saying that, I would personally wait a few months into the semester - maybe finish the first semester first? - before putting yourself down for it (could always ask for it for a Christmas present). Then you'll have a really good idea of how much you'd be using it timewise, and if you can afford it, or even if you still want it.
How much do you lot get ripped off paying for netflix

I've had Netflix throughout University and it's definitely worth it. Much better than shelling out for a TV licence when you just want to kick back and watch something.

You could always share a subscription with someone? You can create separate profiles now so the other person doesn't alter where you were on a show or change your suggestions. My housemate halved it with her younger sister who's also at Uni.

You could always do the free trial (although save it for when the term first settles down) to see how you like it.
I watch netflix you do know it's possible to reroute it so you can get U.S netflix which has 100x more shows and movies  do it!!!!!

Definitely not. University will give you more options for trying exciting new activities and socialising. Ignoring all this and sitting in your room watching junk tv would be a truly pathetic waste of time.

Films can be a good way to socialise but yeah don't sit watching them by yourself
What I would do is have Amazon Prime.

What my family do is we have one main Amazon account between all of us which has my student discount on it (5% off books, DVDs, music, and a few other things), and Amazon Prime on it. So we all get one-day delivery of most stuff, and Amazon instant video. Not *as* great as Netflix, but between Amazon, 4od, and iPlayer I can always find something to watch. You do have to trust each other enough to not order off each others' cards though!

Netflix is pretty good , but hard to find decent shows. I prefer other methods , which have a larger collection of films and TV shows.

I can pm you a website , which is just awesome.

Yes please, I'll have a look!
I'd say get amazon prime instead, I think as a student you get 6 months free. After that it's a little bit cheaper and you get free, quick delivery as a bonus. Even better, share it with other people and split the costs.

Admittedly it does lack a few things which netflix has but it has a handful of advantages like newer, bigger films albeit you have to pay a small fee for them sometimes, still way less than getting the blu-ray/dvd though.

Uh I use all. I just cancel and start another trial with a new email each month, I never pay for them lol

I thought you had to use a different method of payment each time? I tried using a different email but I got denied a free trial because I used the same card and they recognised it.

NEtflix is a godsend at uni. Tell your parents that you want it for TEDtalks if you want them to contribute

But if you don't want to spend money, use primewire. Totally free.
I definitely think its worth it. I pay £6 but everyone on the account uses it. You're watching stuff legally as well. In my experience internet at uni halls and such isn't the strongest so I if I was you I couldn't really be bothered spending ages torrenting and downloading stuff to watch. Netflix is handy cos its always there, if I stop watching it on my computer and have to get the bus, I can continue watching on my iPhone. :ahee: Its really handy I think. It doesn't have -every- movie obviously but there's enough on it that I always have something new to watch. Plus if other people you know have netflix you can all watch the same series and talk about it with eachother, my friends and I did that recently with House of Cards. :bunny:
When I'm feeling particularly flush I do use Netflix but most of the time I can't justify it to myself when there are other (illegal) ways of seeing all of their content for free.
No, theres really not much on there, even with hula unblocker. You can watch anything you want on putlocker. I have it, and use it, but thats only because my parents have me on their account.

like a year ago it didn't used to deny, but now i have like 6 bank cards so i use a different one each time lol, or i use a friend or family's paypal/card(with their permission obviously). netflix denies same cards, but amazon you only need a new email

No, do you people not know what a torrent is? Or what a warez site is? I download every single American tv show I want to watch within 24 hours after it airs in the US. Only a mug pays for TV shows.

Good luck getting away with hundreds of gigabytes of torrents a year in uni dorms.

I'm sure they don't check or care if you're watching porn :P haha.

They keep a check on how much your using, and have automatic systems to pick up torrenting, but you can still use illegal websites like putlocker to watch things.
