This latest outbreak of Ebola has been raging in Africa since the back end of 2013 and really picked up pace in around March of this year. It is big in Guinea ,in and around the major port city of Conakry. There are also reported cases of spread to Bissau, Sierra Leone, Liberia and surrounds. Of course the popular UK holiday destinations of The Gambia and Cape Verde are not that far away. I did read that Mauritania had closed its borders but im not sure whats happening in Senegal.

Truth is that one of the best conduits for spread is plain ignorance and superstition.

A couple of weeks ago i was watching an African based news channel on sat tv (not sky) and the reporter was talking to people in the streets of an African town in the area. A man in the crowd pretty much said that it is all a white mans lie and the disease is being purposely spread by the MSF health workers ! He said that it had nothing to do with eating bush meat and he still eats it and loves a bit of monkey.

Now just look at the arrivals board at an airport in any of our major cities especially the London airports.

It is clear that it is only a matter of time before an Ebola carrier lands in the UK and once he/she hits the tube and starts spluttering everywhere, we will have an outbreak.

We are not talking about poor dirt kickers from Conakry who can barely afford to eat now. We are talking about the spread to African nations such as Nigeria where people have more money and mobility.

There is a long history of companies conducting medical trials on unknowing patients in African countries and other developing nations, but Ebola isn't one of those cases.

Fear of governments, doctors and western medicine is one of the reasons this virus has been able to spread so quickly. Conspiracy theories about governments purposefully spreading the disease is one of the reasons it's been able to take hold.

Ebola is highly contagious, so not taking proper precautions and coming into contact with patients or those who have recently died is a very, very good way to contract the disease.

People are ignoring the advice of doctors and taking matters into their own hands. This is tragic, and bad news indeed as is why Ebola hasn't been able to be brought under control.

EDIT: The reason that there isn't a vaccine/cure developed yet is that up to now Ebola was very rare.
