walaikum assalaam, no I live in Manchester, didn't see a point in applying for accommodation but now I regret it! I don't want to miss out on uni life :frown:

You're still guaranteed a place in halls if you apply by August 31st, so it's not too late to change your mind :nah:

No problem! There's a rather useful (if I may say so myself) FAQ here for you :yep: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=2091577
Hi everyone !

I hope everyone is okay and doing well. My name is Arafat Safi from Afghanistan. I am coming to Manchester city early this september and will pursue my MA International Development: Poverty, Conflict and Reconstruction at the University of Manchester.

I was looking for a reasonable priced accommodation with following features;

a) Single Occupancy
b) Self Catered
c) Other services/facilities shared
c) Nearby or in locality of the University of Manchester.

Thank you in advance.

BR,

Arafat.

Everyone else will be in the same boat! I also knew no one when I arrived at Manchester, and I made friends and generally had a lot of fun.

Just remember to talk to people and socialise with them (NB drinking is not compulsory!) and generally get involved with all that uni life has to offer.

I've heard that the iSoc at Manchester often has a stricter interpretation of Islam than many of the Muslims on campus (to the point that some don't get involved) but the idea that they try to get people married is a new one on me - though admittedly I've not had much by way of direct contact, so it could have passed me by!

What are you studying at MMet, Origami?

I was at Uni of Manchester rather than MMU, and I've graduated now, but I studied politics.

Looks like iSoc is one society that I will not be joining.

First off, Id like to say Salaams to everyone who is planning on coming to UoM this september - I myself am a 1st Year Law student and I am a part of the ISOC at UoM  I would like to say that you do not need to worry about people trying to pair you off with someone - the ISOC is an informal, social and friendly society - they have segregated events for us ladies and the men. So you dont need to worry about getting married from the ISOC

If you have any questions about living in manchester, looking for places with halal food, any issues with accommodation, what we do for fun or anything else, let me know - you can pm me or just reply to this message :colondollar:

Id just like to welcome you all and hope you have an awesome time in manchester! InShaAllah

Hey, I'll be joining UoM on the 21st September to study Pharmacy inshaAllah  I was wondering if you know any places of accommodation that I could stay with other Muslim girls. Also about Freshers week, does the ISOC at UoM hold anything for Freshers?

salaams sarah - first off Id like to say congratulations for getting into UoM to study Pharmacy this september! MashaAllah
In terms of accommodation for single females, i would suggest you have a closer look at St.Gabriels hall - one of my muslims friends stayed there last yr for her accommodation. If you can, try and get an en-suite room so you don't have to share a bathroom with others.
Secondly, regarding freshers week - our ISOC does lots of early yr socials so that new students can get to know each other - this is all segregated  Last yr we had a bowling social, a dinner and they also had a mount snowden challenge in november. Make sure you have a look at the fb page so you can keep up to date with all the relevant info of the ISOC.
If you have any issues or questions about UoM just PM,
Alia
