Rural crime on the increase

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-28704686

Crime in rural areas is on the increase, with sheep rustling and theft of farming equipment helping to drive up the figures.

As well as increase in incidents of livestock theft, there also seems to be more animals taken in each raid.

The number of vehicles stolen actually fell, but modern equipment is high tech and expensive to buy, so the value of insurance claims rose.

It can be a difficult problem to deal with due to the fact that it happens in rural areas.
These aren't just opportunistic thieves. They are organised and target farms knowing they can ship out the items to places like Russia and Eastern Europe where agricultural exports are very expensive.

But nothing will be done about it by anyone in the higher ups, because the countryside is largely ignored until someone wants to win some votes from those in the cities by making it look like they give a **** about animals.

I work closely with a local conservation group and we've had plenty of livestock rustling going on in the area, overwhelmingly by recent Romanian emigres. Blame the bastards at the top for opening our country's green pastures to these ex commie nations.

Yeah there are some hooligans overwhelmingly amongst the locals obviously. Lots of litter strewn everywhere... no respect for the countryside amongst some people, it's being cut off from the food process, they need teaching where it comes from from their earlier days or just see farmland etc. as a playground.

Most have no jobs to go to or exams they might pass. They know no family role models, for most live in homes in which the father is unemployed, or from which he has decamped.

A key factor in delinquency is lack of effective sanctions to deter it. From an early stage, feral children discover that they can bully fellow pupils at school, shout abuse at people in the streets, urinate outside pubs, hurl litter from car windows, play car radios at deafening volumes, and, indeed, commit casual assaults with only a negligible prospect of facing rebuke, far less retribution.

Our generation are not the worst. I work for a large conservator group and speaking to some of the wardens they had much worse problems about 30 years ago. More rubbish left behind, more deaths in the quarries and more people riding motor bikes over conservation land.

Our generation are drinking less, smoking less and doing less drugs. We have one of the highest University attendance rates and better literacy rates. Only the worst of our generation make it into the media because good news doesn't sell.
