I've actually just finished a book called Farmageddon, written by the ceo of compassion in world farming. It's about the intensive farming industry and its effects at both a local and international scale. Really well written with an interesting chapter on the role of the vet - obviously some parts are quite biased and sensationalised however it's very thought provoking on the whole. Would def recommend to any aspiring vets interesting in specialising in livestock later on! 
I bought Farmageddon the other day while buying leaving gifts for my teachers but I really couldn't get into it at all. As you say it seemed very biased and in my opinion a lot of it just seemed to be stories of the author going to different places; I thought it could be a lot more concise. I'll give it another go though now that you've recommended it
Anyone else s***ting themselves about results?!? Keep having vivid dreams (omens?!) featuring my chemistry teacher and dead cats....
I'm not looking forward to it either. I *know* that I've done horrifically in maths (I literally wouldn't be surprised at a U lmao) and, well, we both know how that first biology paper went

Are you on OCR Salters B for chemistry by any chance? Because those papers were an absolute dream come true, genuinely the best exams I've ever sat. I thought I'd got full marks in paper 1 until I realised that I goofed and put down that something was ionic rather than covalent
. Paper 2 was a nice surprise as well given that I thought that I would **** it up completely. The terrorism with radioactive substances bit was especially good as one of the people who worked on the Alexander Litvinenko case now works at my school so he'd given us a presentation with loads of cool stuff 
The C2 paper on the other hand made he want to rip out my spleen, but at least I wasn't one of the people that came out of the exam crying, despite answering less than half of the paper

HAHHAHA oh god OCR Biology 1....I might go and drown myself in the nearest French lake now....can you accidentally on purpose choke to death on croissants?!
Ahhhh PW, I could've sent you my copy, it's bloody expensive!! Hope you glean something useful from it! LTC, I do agree, I think it was more of a PR thing for the charity than anything else. It reinforced what many have known for aaages, however it has made me more vigilant when buying meat. Don't automatically think Red Tractor means free range people!! Cause most of the time, it doesn't, sadly.

Lights, Camera, Action at the RVC! The wait is now over. We’re delighted to announce that the first episode of ‘Young Vets’ will aired on Tuesday 19th August on BBC 2 at 7.00pm.
ITN has produced a ten-part observational documentary series will follow a group of students during their final year here at the The Royal Veterinary College (RVC).
The series spans the breadth of the young vets’ last year of study as they get hands-on experience with animals for the first time – from conducting life or death surgery to bringing newborn animals into the world.
Viewers will see the students in the state-of-the-art RVC veterinary facilities and out on farms, practices and stables across the country. Each episode will combine the progress of the young vets’ training in their final year.
We’ve been lucky enough to have a sneak preview of all episodes and we’re thrilled with how the show has turned out. The episodes will make you laugh, cry and fill you with joy as you grow attached to our featured students and with the animals that they care for.

When you are logging your WEX how many. Hours count as a day, how many days count as a week? Some places I have been to, their day is only four hours long and then others are like fourteen/fifteen hours, do I class them based on this or do I need a certain amount of hours? Thanks for any reply.

I know they class 5 days as a week eg Monday - Friday but I'm not too sure about how many hours a day is! I'd probably say between 5 and 8 hours is one day but I'm not sure

Did anybody watch Operation Wild this evening? Again it was really interesting; they had eye surgery on an orang-utan and a skin graft on a rhino, among other things. Well worth watching
I was wondering if you guys had any thoughts on the procedure they did to the first rhino? For those who haven't watched it, the vets anaethatised the animal, drilled a hole into its horn and filled it full of red dye. The dye is harmless to the rhino, but toxic to humans, so should the horn be removed it will be worthless to poachers, who will be unable to sell it for consumption. The dye also shows up in airport scanners in the event that anybody attempts to export the horn. Now, I'm no expert and I realise this , but in my opinion the task seems pointless as the dye isn't visible from the outside. From what I could see, the vets only put duct tape on the horn, which I'd imagine would eventually rub/fall off. By the time poachers cut off the horn and realise that the dye is there, it will be too late. The rhino will be dead, and now the poachers will have to kill another one in order to make their money. I'd like to think that the poachers aren't just malicious people hell-bent on driving rhinos to extinction. I'd prefer to believe that they only do it because they need to. I know nothing about the economic climates and career prospects in far away countries, but if people are killing rhinos because its their only means of supporting themselves, then that's a justification for it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not condoning their actions, it's still disgusting and deplorable, I'm merely saying that it's understandable. In my eyes the dye seems pointless, as it only serves a purpose after a rhino is dead, by which time it is too late. I'd honestly prefer it if people could make money from it so that the animal didn't have to be killed for nothing.

Okay this is going to sound super duper lame or whatever but seeing as results day is tomorrow I just wanted to wish people the best of luck. I sincerely hope that everybody gets the grades that they want, and if you don't, remember that it's not the end of the world. Resits exist (I'm certainly expecting at least one really awful result myself!). Everybody on here has worked so hard this year, both academically and in other ways, such as towards work experience. There are people on here that I genuinely consider to be friends and I'm so unbelievably proud of every one of you.

But I just wanted to wish you all good luck as I realise how nervous you must be today but you will do just fine! also just wondered if any of you have started your personal statement?

I was 8 UMS off for maths and 10 ums off the A for biology.

It would be a long shot (they tend to move no more than 5 UMS either way), but if you wanted to give it a try you could, provided you were happy to pay for it.
