It's never right to hit someone first but I don't see a problem to hit someone else if they hit you first, regardless of age or gender.

I think everyone should just keep their hands to themselves. But in my opinion, it's justifiable to hit someone in self defense regardless of their gender. I don't get the whole 'but women are generally weaker than men!' rubbish. If a small skinny man hit a much stronger man, no one would say 'That man is much weaker than you don't hit him back'. The response would probably be 'What sort of idiot goes around hitting people that are much bigger than him'. Women who hit men and expect to not be hit back are so ridiculous.

Having said this though, I think when defending yourself, you shouldn't use excessive force (regardless of the attacker's gender). If someone slaps you for example, it's not right to beat them to a pulp.

It is the distinction that "It is never OK to hit a woman" which gets me; it is never okay to hit either a man or woman as violence is not an ideal solution to any problem. There shouldn't be a distinction made between the biological sexes, and the only time I would say it was justifiable to hit either sex is in self defence.

If a woman punches me in my face I'll probably slap her hard in the face. She can't give it out and then not expect to be hit back because she's a woman. There are consequences.

Bingo. The man would've probably been beaten to a pulp and no one would've bat an eyelid because he started the violence. The whole strength argument doesn't come into the equation at any point (because it's irrelevant, not because all men are of equal strength) UNLESS you add a pair of boobs as well.
