Yep, a quantum is the smallest discrete unit of stuff, a nice analogy is sand on the beach which looks like one big mess but is made up of lots of tiny grains when you look closer (the grains being the quantum in this case)

I think OP meant that when a particle vibrates between energy levels from the ground state to the next state up, it can only be in one or the other in the same way that you can either look left or right but not both at the same time :holmes:

Ohh sorry, it's that since the other atoms are in ground state ( and the atom is only one energy above this) so the atom can't lose part of it's energy, it loses all of it. Does that make sense?
