At hospitals they do. So basically any dentist who decides to specilise they will be working long hours in their junior years, same as doctors.

Thats true, although, dentists can specialise without residency in a hospital is some specialities - they can do MSCs in ortho, endo etc which allows them to enter the specialist register, but they cost a lot.

Oral surgery, MaxFax and paeds I think are exceptions though.

What year of university are you in? Don't tell him rubbish. If youre not at university, even more so, don't tell him rubbish. To the other guy, chem with man is a v good course, I know that much, any of those is fine

What rubbish did I tell him? If you go to LSE for literally anything, you have a better chance of getting an interview at an top investment banking firm?

since when does better chance mean the same as LSE = interview? Read what you write at least? And no not really, you need to go somewhere where you can get onto exec positions too and also enjoy university. LSE doesn't really fit the last criteria. Warwick or ucl is better for that and probably a little less strenuous too.

Don't mean to pour cold water but Sociology is on the LSE/ Cambridge black list

I'm not going to either of those universities so I'm not sure how that is relevant?

LSE, Cambridge, Oxford and Warwick applicants have a much larger chance of landing interviews than those from very good unis like Notts, Bath, Bristol etc. They are also more likely to land the all important internship in their years at university meaning overall they are more likely to get the job. I never said it was inpossible to get ino these firms from other unis, but it will be tough, my uncle is at one and he went to Kent for A&F.

And who says you cant have fun at these unis? Uni is what YOU make of it.

Because its a cycle; the best candidates generally go to those universities and so it continues. If you understand the basics of your chosen division and write a sick cover letter and comp qs/interview, you will get sws.

Yes you don't have to tell me, I go to one of those 4. You can ask most people at LSE, or people on here how fun it is lol.

Yes but that does not mean they are not look down upon. Universities lower in the order tend to follow the trends set by top universities

For IB, and in fact GENERAL job prospects, I'd DEFINITELY take the Bristol A&F course first (if you don't get into banking internships/in the industry with that, I presume you can still become a very senior accountant with that course, considering it is Bristol? You could surely have a good chance of becoming a partner with that?) That's my overriding first choice. Next, I'd take Nottingham Industrial Economics (which is far better than you think, I think...), then Edinburgh, then Exeter, and lastly Lancaster. Don't take my word as extremely founded. With the level of awareness I have for my experience and age, that's what my opinion is; and I'm well-researched, but I am a 17 year old who's far from going through all this yet. Someone else better than me give this guy their opinions?

Thanks i really appreciate the advice

Within investment banks i wanna work in asset management and I heard black rock and aberdeen asset management, target edinburgh graduates for their edinburgh office, so that might be a good option also. what makes you rate notts industrial economics so highly

Industrial Economics is pretty diverse, and it basically isn't far off core economics. Nottingham is very good. Tbh, Edinburgh is far more respected than most think. People say it isn't top 10. It is though. Well, definitely top 12. I would put the top 10 as: Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial, LSE, UCL, Warwick, Bristol, Durham, Nottingham, Edinburgh/KCL/Bath.

Edinburgh's name is 'known', cos it's the capital of Scotland. I asked some American guys I know what they knew about good unis in the UK. They brought up the typical top 5, Durham, Edinburgh and Bristol/Bath. Edinburgh would give you very good international prospects after some years of work experience too I'd say, again, cos it's a capital/people internationally would know its name. Just for IB though, I believe Nottingham is a fair bit more of a 'semi-target' than Edinburgh is.

No Notts is below Edin. both are not targets for FO.

MO/BO maybe if that is what you all are referring to. Then again any one from anywhere can apply so long as you make the 2.1 cut off, even if you are from Westminster

He has a point lol. Though honestly I'm a bit surprised as to why he rates Edinburgh higher; curious to know why. I have to admit he may be right. As i said the name of Edinburgh university makes it far more respected than most think. If u look at the stat of the top 10 unis for making millionaires, it goes oxbridge (upper echelons course), lse (bankers/traders), imperial, and then something like Manchester, Bristol then Edinburgh, or something like that. It's in the top 6/7 of that top 10 for making millionaires I'm pretty sure. Probably a bunch of eventual high level/senior people and future directors/ceos that come from Edinburgh. It genuinely seems like it's got alright prospects, outside IB of course.. Manchester's got a ton of connected middle-classes probs.

So what about bristol and exeter ?
Hi I'm a student of modern languages at Cambridge in my 2nd year.

I am on track for a First, do lots of extracurricular activities and have experienced law and insurance, but have not done anything for investment banking or asset management to date. Will this affect me when it comes to summer scheme applications? If so, which divisions of banking/asset management do you think would suit my application best? Any other advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
