Hello! Not a lot to be honest. I only started my Foundation course this week but I started my sketch book today. It's pretty bad quality so I'm really hoping to try and improve, I'm not really used to using a sketchbook! I do have a lot of pieces i used for my portfolio to get into the course I'm in now but I'm hoping I have enough by the time Im applying to avoid using any of them! What about you? And are you still in school or are you doing a foundation course etc? :smile:

Well, actually I've finished school, I'm Italian and I'll take a gap year become starting the university so, I'm creating my portfolio… I have to make it before the interviews :smile:

I don't have a sketchbook but I'm working on it, my works are maily digital, I use Photoshop and Illustrator…

This poster is not an official representative of the university. The official reps have a title under their user names on their profiles. That is not to say that this person cannot answer your question, but it is strictly as an individual, and not as an advertiser or representative.

My name's Nick and i'm a lecturer on the course, so i'm not sure if that makes me 'official' or not. Apologies if i haven't followed board rules. Hopefully the advice i give on here is as neutral as possible, although obviously i am here to represent the programme.

I'm afraid it doesn't make you official - that has to be done via the community team and with authorisation from the university to use their name. That doesn't stop you from posting as an individual at all - very welcome.

Official enough for me, haha. The thing is, I ordered the 2014 Hertfordshire Mini-Guide earlier in the year (I'm planning on applying for 2015, but this was the latest version available), and the course I was interested in was listed as 'Graphic Design And Illustration'.

Now I check the website, it seems to just be 'Graphic Design', although the name 'Graphic Design and Illustration' is still referenced throughout the description.

I was just wondering which is the correct name of the degree, and if it is simply Graphic Design, does it still contain illustrative elements or is it more based on typography/layout etc now?

Yes, sorry - it's a bit confusing, partly because the website has just been incorrectly updated. It should be fixed soon.

The course is still called 'Graphic Design & Illustration'. However, at the end of the first semester in the first year (approximately 3 months in) students choose whether they want to take the graphic design or illustration pathway. Until that point all the students are taught together. After that you'll be taught the specialist skills that will result in either a BA (Hons) Graphic Design or BA (Hons) Illustration degree.

This 'combined' first semester allows students to experience both pathways as well as receive guidance from staff as to what we think would suit them best, although it's entirely the student's choice. Hope that helps.

I want to study Fine Art Ba but I'm edging towards doing a foundation first because I want to improve my portfolio. Has anyone done this at Hull College? It's the closest to me, but I don't know if it's any good.
I have decent As grades R.E- A, Art BTEC- Distinction, Media BTEC- Merit, Film Studies- C.

One more thing, if you wouldn't mind... does this mean you look for portfolios with an even balance of graphic design / illustration? Because I have a feeling mine is going to be strongly graphic design based (as that's what I'd like to go into, although I do enjoy illustration too).

Basically, would I be at a disadvantage if my portfolio contained much more of one than the other?

Hello! I'm starting my art foundation course at my local college this week. So far, I've looked at Fine Art at Goldsmiths, Graphic communications at Chealsea College of Art and Norwich College of Art, Creative advertising at Falmouth and Leeds College of Art.
Ultimately, I've want to do Fine Art at Goldsmiths - just waiting to go to their open day to confirm my decision.

We're happy looking at portfolios that specialise in one or the other, or that are really general. We're just after talented people with plenty of potential!

I'm considering applying to Central Saint Martins, Camberwell and Greenwich atm because I really want to study in London. I left college a year and a half ago though with a MMP in BTEC art and design so I feel quite worried about my grades. These grades were because I was so lazy and unenthusiastic in my first year of college where I was 16/17. I've matured since then so hope I can show I'm ready to learn and develop myself now that I'm older and my mindset has changed.
