stereotypes?

Can somebody please give me their point of views to the following statements.

Gay men are fashion conscious & enjoy shopping & style.
Real men don't cry.
People of African descent are particularly musical and artistic.
Most women are too soft and feminine to be a good boss.
Black Africans are naturally more spiritual than other groups of people.
Most teenagers drink too much.
Gay people make good parents and should be able to adopt.
Asians work harder than Caucasians because they all have good morals.
Lesbians hate men
Children under 10 cannot take responsibility for their behaviour
Elderly people are afraid to try new things.
People with disabilities can't excel at sport
'Real men don't cry'
I personally think that isn't true. The statement makes it sound like crying is classed as a weakness, when it really isn't.

'People with disabilities can't excel at sport'
Honestly it depends on the severity of the disability, some people may be only mildly disabled and can do activities ie: sports quite easily with no problem, so I think that is untrue to a certain extent.
Gay men are fashion conscious & enjoy shopping & style.
Generally gay men are more fashion conscious than straight men, but it's definitely not the case for everyone.

Real men don't cry.
Not true at all.

People of African descent are particularly musical and artistic.
I think music and art is very much embedded in African culture. I wouldn't expect someone to be good at music or art just because of their ethnicity, though.

Most women are too soft and feminine to be a good boss.
Not true.

Black Africans are naturally more spiritual than other groups of people.
I would probably agree, but only because of the huge emphasis on the 'gospel music' stereotype. There are probably just as many spiritual people out there of other ethnic backgrounds.

Most teenagers drink too much.
Probably - emphasis on 'most'.

Gay people make good parents and should be able to adopt.
Generally, yes. I'm sure there are some gay people who wouldn't make good parents. There are some straight people who wouldn't make good parents. There's no reason, however, why someone who is gay would be any less of a parent.

Asians work harder than Caucasians because they all have good morals.
I'm going to have to say yes (although I don't like the use of 'all'). There are exceptions to the rule, but there seems to be a strong work/education ethic in Asian culture.

Lesbians hate men
Not usually.

Children under 10 cannot take responsibility for their behaviour
Not true. Not saying we should send 5-year-olds to prison, but the majority of children (should) know the difference between basic right and wrong.

Elderly people are afraid to try new things.
Probably, but with good reason - they've lived their entire lives knowing what they like and what they don't, and they're more prone to physical injury than young people. Then again you hear about 100-year-olds skydiving so it can't be said for everyone.

People with disabilities can't excel at sport
Have you ever watched the Paralympics?
As for mental illnesses/disabilities not covered under the Paralympics, there's still no reason why not. It may be harder to achieve but it doesn't mean they don't have the skill.

Not a bad stereotype to have, don't know many gay men, so can't comment.

Real men don't cry.

Nah, real men are strong for people around them. They can cry as long as they keep strong and supportive.

People of African descent are particularly musical and artistic.

No, they just have massively different cultures, so we see them differently.

Most women are too soft and feminine to be a good boss.

Why must a boss be hardened and aggressive, a good boss is understanding and approachable.

Black Africans are naturally more spiritual than other groups of people.

This is true I think, from the ones I've come across. A very good trait to have.

Most teenagers drink too much.

Most people drink too much.

Gay people make good parents and should be able to adopt.

Possibly, gay men can be more feminine so make good parents.

Asians work harder than Caucasians because they all have good morals.

Or because it's encouraged in their culture.

Lesbians hate men

Dunno, don't know any and never asked them.

Children under 10 cannot take responsibility for their behaviour

Legally speaking, true

Elderly people are afraid to try new things.

True, but we're all afraid of change

People with disabilities can't excel at sport

The ones I know are but I don't think every single gay men will be exactly the same. There are quite a few gay fashion designers though.

Real men don't cry.
Not true, they just don't want to seem weak in front of people they're not familiar with.

People of African descent are particularly musical and artistic.
They are?

Most women are too soft and feminine to be a good boss.
A good boss should be good at managing people and motivating them which does not necessarily require them to be aggressive and harsh.

Black Africans are naturally more spiritual than other groups of people.
Not naturally but brought up to be.

Most teenagers drink too much.
Yes, at least in England it seems like it.

Gay people make good parents and should be able to adopt.
I don't see how sexuality should have any influence on your parenting ability,

Asians work harder than Caucasians because they all have good morals.
Not so much having "good morals" as much as being pushed to work harder by parents from a young age. Education is considered important in Asian culture.

Lesbians hate men
I only know one lesbian and she doesn't hate men.
Children under 10 cannot take responsibility for their behavior
Children should know right from wrong but may not know enough to be able to make informed choices and their decisions may easily be influenced by their parents suggestions.

Elderly people are afraid to try new things.
Aren't we all? Elderly people may have a set routine and if it has been working for them why change it?

People with disabilities can't excel at sport
Ever heard of Paralympics? They may have more difficulty in training than someone without disabilities but there's no reason for them not to achieve the same level of skill.

These seem like more personal notions than general stereotypes :K: but denouncing the provided stereotypes is ironically stereotypical. Sometimes, a lot of the times, they each have merit.

@ the bold, that's news to me. I've heard the latter but the preceding statement...head scratcher. :s-smilie:
"Most women are too soft and feminine..."

No no no,for example women professors are evil and they're kicking my ass.
Gay men are fashion conscious & enjoy shopping & style.

Lots of gay men are like this, yes, but that doesn't mean all of them are. Someones sexuality doesn't define their personality.

Real men don't cry.

Real men do cry. Real humans cry. Most people cry.

People of African descent are particularly musical and artistic.

Never heard this one before to be honest  I don't believe they're anymore musical or artistic than the next person.

Most women are too soft and feminine to be a good boss.

Not true. I've met or seen many dominant women who make perfect bosses. Not all women are femenine  Many actually make better bosses than men. Just my opinion, can't really explain why tbh, just think that :P

Black Africans are naturally more spiritual than other groups of people.

I have noticed in my school that Black Africans are generally more spiritual than all other groups of people but I'm not sure why.

Most teenagers drink too much.

Nope. Some of them don't drink at all. I think most drink too much but on irregular occasions, like at a party every few months when they'll binge drink.

Gay people make good parents and should be able to adopt.

Not all gay people will make good parents, just like not all straight people will make good patents. But they should be as equally considered as a straight person willing to adopt.

Asians work harder than Caucasians because they all have good morals.

Nope, never heard this one either  However, I have noticed that people from poorer countries who have come to Britain seem to work harder than some British kids. Maybe because they appreciate the chance of education a lot more.

Lesbians hate men

Nope. Some do, some don't.

Children under 10 cannot take responsibility for their behaviour.

Yes they can depending on how educated they are. If a 9 year old intentionally stabs another child with a knife then of course they can take responsibility as it was their fault and they knew it would cause harm. Though a baby can't take responsibility for his/her behaviour. It's a tough one :/

Elderly people are afraid to try new things.

Nope, loads of them find new technology fascinating. Again, this is another generalisation because a lot of them do get nervous of trying new things

People with disabilities can't excel at sport

Of course they can.
