I think optometrists earn a bit more than standard radiographers but from my knowledge optometrist's salaries depend on how many glasses they sell. With radiography its an agreed NHS salary scale that you can move up, for example you start as a band 5 radiographer on about £21,000 and can move up to £27,000, then you can specialise and earn up to £34,000, which is the top of band 6. After that there is still room for a higher salary for example taking on an advanced role or moving into management. With optometry you probably start on a slightly higher wage but it would remain more constant.

From my knowledge the job market is pretty strong for diagnostic radiography right now, its probably a little weaker for optometry.

There are quite a few more females in radiography, not necessarily a bad thing! But there are more and more males involved.

Radiographers aren't given the same "status" as doctors or whatever, but nor are optometrists. Having said that, both are as well respected as the next job.To be honest, though, you shouldn't just pick a job for how well it is respected. At the end of the day peoples attitudes should have no bearing on your career choice.

Hey Munez, have you not made your mind up yet mate?

Seriously are you really wanting to do a medical type degree because you feel it is a vocation or just what is considered a respected well paid degree from family or friends?

I don't care whether radiography is funded, I don't care what I earn at the end, I just want to take good xray images and help people, may be progress in to sonography in the future.

It is my belief that ultimately those in the caring professions should be there because they care about their fellow human beings not because they want to please their family and gain respect or because it's the next best thing because they don't meet the grade to do medicine.

Do do you really want to do a medical degree or honestly do you feel the pull anywhere else?

Radiogrpahy is mostly females from what I can see too. I've just stared in uni, and judging by my year and the above years it's blatant that it's dominated by females.

But in most cases, and with the good unis, radiography has an extremely high job guarantee at the end of it. In the uni I'm at, it's 100%, but most places are in the 90%s too.

I think the entry requirements for optometry are slightly higher too... Not that that makes any difference. Radiogrpahy is the better option anyway :biggrin:
