ask your teacher?

He hasn't provided any details in structuring the 24, 33 & 52 marker.

it's his job to do that - ask him to do this
17 mark question:

Two clear paragraphs, with each paragraph containing one point. You are being asked to explain two points, so make sure you do two

Twelve marks are given for your knowledge and understanding in this question, and you will need to include studies, concepts, theories or examples in each paragraph

You will get four marks for your answer being relevant and applied to the question; quite simply you need to ensure that you are answering the question.

33 mark question:
Introduction: Define- highlight your factors for argument for and against briefly- to show what you are going to do

Main body: Argue for. Set out your point, use example (a caste study/experiment?) then explain the point your making in context with example and other knowledge and any sources/items (if said to use item) Then add brief sentence of evaluation

Then Argue against- PEE. This will be your analysis and evaluation. You will explain it in depth. You do not have to have examples for every point you're making but make sure you have at least one for each for and against

hope this helps, its helped me alot

Conclude: Make judgement, explaining why you came to that judgement with reference to certain factors...

8 mark
you need to give the definition of what the question is asking for. for example 'describe the concept identity'.

you also need to include:
examples - these can be examples of [identity], concepts or
theories if applicable (functionalist and marxism)

4 marks are for the definition
4 marks for examples

16 mark
this question needs two paragraphs explaining two features/ways/aspects. for example 'outline and explain two ways in which the family socialises individuals into their culture. this is asking HOW they do it e.g., manipulation.

you need to give examples (see above for types of examples you can give)

12 marks are awarded for knowledge and understanding
4 marks are awarded for interpretation

24 mark
this is a mini essay and it is asking you to explain and evaluate a statement in relation to culture, identity and/or socialisation. again there is a need for sociological evidence.

intro

main body

conclusion

^^ this is the structure of your mini essay

12 marks are awarded for the knowledge and understanding
8 marks are awarded for interpretation
4 marks are awarded for evaluation (this can include criticisms!)

52 mark
this is your big one and it is based on the pre release that you have already seen in class. i could give you a plan for this but it depends on what is in the pre release (the study and the methods etc.)

to give a break down of what you need to put in it is:

strengths and weaknesses of the methods using key concepts - validity, representativeness, generalizability and reliability.

you also need to make reference to sampling and ethics and the theories related to research methods (positivism and interpretivism)

i hope this helps you! if you are unsure about anything PM me and I can give you some more help or clear things up if you need it.:smile:

Do you use notes that the teacher gives you to revise or the OCR AS G671 & G672 books from Collins? I find G672 quite easy to revise but atm I'm making notes/definitions for the types of culture but can't think of any examples. Also, thanks for your help & a plan for the 52 marker would be greatly appreciated as the pre-release is able to view on the website. Thanks again!!

52 mark question, i actually think you have the same pre release as me...it looks at fatherhood in different ethnic families? if I am right I will give you the plan I am using. if it is a different pre release then you can tweak it your advantage...

1st paragraph

say what qualitative data is and which methods collect it

which of those methods were used in the study (refer to pre release) and which ones collected qual data

positivist/interpretivist approach?

2nd paragraph
here focus on the primary research method - advantages and disadvantages of it.

link to pre release e.g

location and length of interview

use of a topic guide

remember ad and disads are the concepts that i gave earlier (validity)

3rd paragraph
this is the sample paragraph - what is it and the advantages and disadvantages for it.

4th paragraph
CONCLUSION!! the final part of this 52 mark question .
this is the 'fit for purpose'

i cant remember what fit for purpose actually meant but when i find it out i can give it to you if you would like.

another point when using concepts like reliability for the first time you need to define it! it can give you extra marks, apparently.

as for the revision, I use the notes that i wrote down in class and the G671 unit book (i havent looked at G672 yet) for the examples for the different cultutres i think some are in the book. if you look from page 6 to page 9 that should help you out. but to help you out even further...

popular culture culture examples can be the types of activities they take part in etc

hope this helps, let me know if you need anything else!!

If you could show me your plan it would be much appreciated & are there 38 Concepts that we need to learn? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_OlYEJBoDM My Revision cards for the concept follow this structure as shown on the link. For the 8 marker, 4 marks is explaining the concept but If I give a definition is that worth 2 marks. So then I only need 2 further points to gain the full marks. Also, do you have any idea of the questions they may ask after receiving the pre-release for 8,16 & 24? Thanks for your help!!:smile:

I think the questions may be based on ethnicity Gender or Social class and topics surrounding the pre release. These are some examples I can think of at the moment.

8 mark - describe the concept ethnicity/gender/gender roles/masculinity

16 mark - outline and explain two ways individuals gain an ethnic identity/identity
outline and explain two ways in which [agent of socialisation] socialises individuals

24 mark - explain and briefly evaluate the importance of [agent] in the creation of ethnic/gender identities
explain and briefly evaluate the view that masculinity is changing

52 mark - using the pre-release and your wider sociological knowledge, explain and evaluate the use of qualitative/mixed data collection methods as a way of researching fatherhood across different ethnic groups.

or ethnographic methods!

there are a lot of concepts for G671 and I would advise learning as you can get marks for using them in your 16, 24 and 52 mark answers but not all of them will come up for a definition.
hope this helps!

Hi, I wanted to ask that you receive 4 and 8 marks for interpretation but what exactly is it? I understand that knowledge & understanding include theories, studies, concepts and examples. Also, the evaluation is practically your opinion; for example, family socialisation is the most important agency but then you could talk about education and compares those to. Many Thanks.
anyone have an same essay on pre release?
Reply 12
anyone know any predictions???
Based on the pre-release I would definitely guess the 52 marker is going to be about qualitative research methods. I can't really see them doing quantitative but I would advise practicing for mixed methods as well.

12 marks for interpretation and application. Which is basically putting your answers into context of the question.
20 marks for knowledge and understanding
20 marks for analysis and evaluation.

For interpretation you need at least 3 context points and sustained lip service. Context points are basically points that are relevant to this study only and can't be interchanged with answers for other studies. For example, A downside of H&H's study is they didn't opternalise (define) the word father. As the word father could include biological, step fathers, and adoptive. This means could be an issue for other researchers to replicate the study and may effect reliability. Lip service is essentially points that can be said about other studies, eg, semi-structured interviews are good for getting in depth data as the researcher can answer follow up questions etc. for both knowledge and evaluation you basically just have to answer every point (keeping it in context and fully develop the point). So address aim, sample, pilot study, ethics, reliability, validity etc. (hope this helps)
Oh and for 8 markers. Everyone is saying

4 marks for definition and 4 marks for examples.

Just to clear things up its:

2 marks for a definition.

2 marks for the development of the definition.

2 marks for each example.

(just because a lot of people lose marks where they don't develop their definition)

Do you think the last question could be based on ethnicity? Or class?

As in the 8 marker?

I'd say its hard to guess what its going to be on but I'd suggest learning them all. It only takes about 5/6 minutes to write an answer for the 8 makers and then just review them every other week so that they stay fresh in your mind.

If you're talking about the 52. It could be, it wouldn't hurt to revise them. Theres no real contrast between classes in the study though, although it says families from deprived areas I don't know how they'd expect people to relate this to other classes. On the other hand, ethnicity could be a problem. If this came up though I'd expect they would be looking for us to focus on representiveness (generalisability) as the sample is very small, they only looked at 3/4 ethnicities. And percentage wise the amount of people they used from each ethnicity doesn't relate to the percentage of the ethnicity within the contemporary UK.
I agree. I do think they may use mixed methods and qualitative data. I just hope it goes well. If you've got any notes for the 52 marker I'd appreciate it sample essays?
hiya guys.. i was told by my sister that her teacher says they could ask a question on non representative sampling for 52 marks. what do you guys think of the pre release? and i see aspects of class, gender, and ethnicity too in the pre release.
