New job asked for P45 but I can't find it anywhere..

Is this ok?

What is the purpose of giving them your P45 anyway?

Thanks in advance.

Yes I think it will be ok, but I think it is used for tax purposes.

Without handing in your P45 you will be given an emergency tax code. You will therefore have to pay tax on everything you earn at a rate of (iirc) 20%. I may be wrong on the percentage, but you'll definitely be paying tax. If you are not earning enough to pay tax it is worth finding your P45, otherwise you won't get the tax back until the end of the financial year.

If you've not worked yet this financial year, then you don't need to hand in a P45, and you can just fill in a P60 instead (which you'll should do anyway if you've lost your P45).
