Thanks JSP, TSR wont let me rep you again but theyre there in spirit!!!

Ugh, the question that always seems to get me is 'describe a relationship that was difficult to form and what you did etc' ... sooo stumped on that, and I should have plenty having been in part time employment for 5 years!! I suppose because all i can think of is where i've had a douchebag manager, and that's not really something I can discuss in an app and look good :P

Need some advice guys - suppose I did a first-year programme with Firm X, and now I'm applying for a summer vacation scheme with them. But on Firm X's application form for the vac scheme, the questions are identical to those that I answered when applying for the first-year programme. Should I use completely different answers?

Depends on the firm, you're best emailing graduate recruitment to ask. Personally i didn't completely change my answers but rather updated them. No point entirely scrapping an answer that they clearly liked.
Hey,

I've just been told by Clyde & Co that I've been placed on their 'reserve list'. Anyone know the chances of actually getting a placement from there?

I'm thinking a lot of people will get more than one vac scheme and therefore won't attend..
Original post by J-SP
It's really hard to say. It will depend if and how many people withdraw where they have other firms they want to prioritise, and then where about's you sit in the pecking order of the reserve list.

But they wouldn't have a reserve list if they hadn't experienced people withdrawing before so there must be a reasonable chance - just will down to a bit of pot luck as to whether a space becomes available for you.

Thanks! I was thinking this. Seems as Clyde's isn't a magic circle firm perhaps that odds are better than they might be.. Finger crossed!

Do they have multiple schemes and if so are you flexible with which dates you could do?

You have to take it as a positive. If the worse comes to the worst you will be in a strong position to be considered for a TC.

They have 3, but I can only do 2 - I'm running off to Australia for a few weeks! I'm thinking of getting some insurance experience over the summer if I don't get it, as they specialise in insurance law..

Clyde & Co is a very fun firm, spent a week in their corporate department in summer just gone, brilliant people!
When is it best to start applying for summer vac schemes?
Has anyone got any advice for this questions please:

"In relation to a low point, i.e. something that went badly, how did you deal with the experience and what have you learnt from it?"

Is this a trick question? Can anyone provide any examples?
Original post by J-SP
It isn't a trick question. It's about how you deal with set backs and how you pick yourself up to then be successful.

The reality is as a lawyer is that you are going to have that happen a lot, whether it's a mistake you make, losing clients to a competitor, losing a case or a transaction not going ahead as planned due.

Are you able to provide me with some examples at all? I havent had major set backs as such, all I can remember is small mistakes that I have perhaps made, but nothing as such that would constitute me to write a 150 word paragraph on. Really struggling with this one.
AHH! is anyone else having problems making an account for HSF?
Original post by liarpoker
Yeah for HSF you're barred from applying if you're rejected at interview stage or fail the tests pre-interview.

how long does it take to know if you've made it through the SJTs from HSF?

Got an email the same day, but probably no more than 1-2 working days?

Probably depends on how busy they are though.
Also can anyone shed any light on how references are used e.g. do they check them? If so, is it purely administrative?

They definitely do check them and for some like Slaughters, they seem to be a genuine part of the decision making process.

Some firms like Jones Day ask for references prior to making a decision on inviting you to interview.
