Capture them and bring them to justice with the French legal system. Show them that no matter what we will stick to our principles and institutions which will persevere longer than their hatred and ignorance.

It will not work as a deterrent.

It will make them living martyrs.

To really punish them, put them in a normal high security prison for life and make them learn how people in a community must co-operate and be tolerant to get along. Then they'll eventually see the error of their ways. That'll really hurt.

Are you starting to understand why the Americans felt the need to have Camp X-ray/Delta?

Fanatics are often ready to die - hence going down in a hail of bullets is more or less what they want.

European prison is rather cushy for them - they have everything they want and are free to pursue their fanaticism from within and radicalise other people.

These sanctions have no fear factor for potential terrorists. The Americans wanted something so bad and so fearful that it would discourage even these people, and keep them away from everyone else. I don't agree with it, but that's what they do.

Some European countries don't have any concept of whole life imprisonment. In Spain, I think the maximum tariff is 25 years regardless of what you have done. I'm pretty sure that France has a similar maximum of 25-30 years.

It doesn't occur to you that they'll be in prison with a whole other bunch of North Africans and just immediately fall in with the North African / Muslim community in prison?

No where near close, there are two armed suspects in a forest that's larger than Paris at 13,000hc... It's not over.
