Have the Charlie Hebdo terrorists won?

Their aim, or at least a primary aim, was to scare journalists into refraining from publishing images of Muhammad, or indeed blasphemous content. It was a case of: "see what happens if you publish this stuff".

Not one mainstream British publication published the images (overtly) in solidarity with Charlie Hebdo. The Guardian admitted that it does not want to publish the images full stop.

And I bet journalists will now be even more cautious about publishing such images in future.

I appreciate that people don't want to put their lives at risk, but it is a huge shame that it's possible that the terrorists' goal was achieved. Had all publications published the images, fanatics would not have enough resources to target each publisher.

We can't blame the journalists, however. Who is supposed to protect the citizen? The government. We need better security by more efficient immigration programs and more investment into the police/armed forces, blah blah blah, you know the drill. I just don't think the men at the media should be blamed for protecting their families and themselves.

I don't think that the terrorists have won, it is likely that journalists/authors etc are likely to produce material that people may find offensive in the future.

The Charlie Hebdo atrocities are about more than freedom of speech/the right to be offensive or express an opinion - I feel the context of the situation in the Middle East/western state interference also needs to be considered. Targeting the Charlie Hebdo office in particular was just a way of ensuring maximum media coverage of the extremists' actions.

I do find it pretty spineless almost all of the main British media outlets are refusing to show the images. Seems pretty silly claiming you stand with the journalists and their message, and then are giving the terrorists exactly what they want by refusing to show the images through fear of causing offence.

This maybe true but terrorists have also targeted people who have not been involved in publishing material that is considered offensive by some.

The nature of terrorism is to target non-combatants/civilians - with the attacks we have seen in the West over the last decade or so, it seems that to Islamic Fundamentalists anyone is fair game. Having said that, I don't think either side (if you can distinguish it as that) will 'win' - this clash between the west and Middle East has been going on for centuries. It is just sad that the cycle continues.

I don't blame the British media for not wanting to publish them, it's not who will protect them from terrorism per se. But who will protect them from Cameron? He's up there with the dictators with his take on freedom of speech, jailing tweeters and journalists.
