Worried about my knees

My knees seem weak and I'm worried that I'll have problems when I'm older.

I can crouch down fine but it's the getting up which concerns me; my knees make a weird clicking/sort of friction sound and then they'll hurt after.

I wouldn't say I'm overweight so I don't think my weight is causing it. Could it be a lack of exercise? My knees aren't used to being used?

Thank you for any comments
I have a similar problem, although I exercised a lot before hand and my knees crunch going up and down stairs now.
I can't really help/say for sure what you have but all I can say is that mines is due to the biomechanics of my knees and hypermobility. My knees bend further back than normal, weak knee ligaments but the physio says that I pretty much have zero muscle tone/strength in my legs.
My quads are weak and they help keep the kneecap in place. Misaligned/loose kneecaps etc are causing this crunching sound.
It does not damage the knees according to both the Physios I have seen.
Basically you should keep your legs working, resting them due to this is worse unless you are in severe pain obviously.
Running gives me pain so I avoid that and go on the bike or cross trainer instead. Even this requires more work for me than normal people and so I'm working with my Physio to build my leg strength.
The clicking will be reduced once I've got strength in them but will not disappear apparently but my knee crunching is bad. The pain will go.
All I can suggest is going to the doctor and try to get a Physios opinion.
Took me like 4 times at the Doctor until they took it seriously and although my 1st Physio was right about what I had, the 2nd Physio (that was a fight to get) is so much better!
Sorry I've blabbed, just if you have anything I've mentioned it might help or make you feel better

I'm exactly the same - hypermobility EDS more likely and due to start rehab with it :/ it's mainly in my right knee which I've always had a problem with. The clicking and grating has got so loud and painful. Physio gave me the string imagination strengthening task which is teach me to use a different set of muscles. Idk if it's working or I'm not getting it right! That being said I get the same sounds in my left elbow!!

How old are you btw? How long you been suffering with this? I've been poorly with Fibro and ME so that's why my muscles have weakened me thinks!

It's mostly my left knee that gives me pain. It used to only be the left but then both knees started crunching. Yeah, very loud! Hate going up and down stairs. My elbows bend back but not as bad as my legs, I get no crunching with them.
I'm 24, it's almost been 3 years now since I've had this :/
What about you?
I used to be fit and active and never had any problems besides severe growing pains. I'm not now though unfortunately, even just cycling for 5 mins on a exercise bike is strenuous for me. My legs just tire.
I haven't been diagnosed with anything besides Hypermobility. When I ask about why I have little strength in my legs compared to others even when I'm attempting to strengthen them and little is happening or I used to be fine, they just say it's the biomechanics of my legs!!
Do you still manage activities like running? Does it affect a lot of your day?

Idk who you're asking if its the OP I won't say too much. But in answer of your questions on my behalf.

I have HEDS myself and its been possibly a problem than I know, as its only been a relatively recent thing to be diagnosed with. My activity levels are minimal as the mobility has been deeply affected by the condition. I'm 28 and before I was ill I was quite active, with playing tennis, going to the gym, judo and walking. I am lucky if I can manage walking slowly in a granny slow fashion. I'm sure to manage my pain and struggle with what I can do, and sometimes can be as bad as being bedbound.

It would seem that it has been a right side of my body thing. My ankle, knee, hip and shoulder. with the exception of my left elbow that grates and clicks! Hopefully going to physio and rehab soon will help somehow but I've had the former before and personally don't rate it esp now if they trying to treat something thats a chronic condition causing these probs - which there is no cure just pain management!

My first Physio was poor. I mean I did the strengthening exercises I was given but there was no monitoring, very little improvement and that's when my right knee started clicking too. I was very strict with myself as well, was a bit disheartening.
It is the Physio at the hospital I am with now and so far it has been a lot of stretching exercises but they've looked into it all so much more and I'm getting a training programme designed for me.
I know what you mean, really unfortunate. It will hopefully help you though, even slightly.
Was it a gradual process for you? From like a bearable pain with normal/slightly restricted movement in a few joints to eventually extreme pain with limited movement in many joints?

I didn't like my first session with Physio, got it again tomorrow but I'm not hopeful, the physio gave me an exercise to bend from the butt haha, and imagine a string from the kneecap up to my thigh but it sounds like its grating and clicking more. The stairs are the hardest for me to do and weight bearing. I feel the grating and clicking has only been bad of late in the last couple years. I thought it was bcos I put on weight but I don't think so. I think its linked to my HEDS diagnosis. But my elbow clicking/grates the same way. Keeping an eye on it, and seeing a specialist for my HEDS and gonna be entering a rehab programme and maybe they're be more specific to my needs than a general physio is from what I've experienced thus far. Lets keep our opts open for now. But keep each other posted.

I'd say this is a lack of exercise. Your knees dont have the support of bearing your weight and pushing it up which is why it's easy going down because your working with gravity. Do regular squats and leg stretches.

But do it at a pace that won't damage your knees further! Bcos you need to build up the strength in your muscles around the knee to support the exercises

I am being looked into for POTS now and Type 4 EDS. Hopefully I haven't them too or Fibromyalgia because that would really tick me off. My Echo is tomorrow so that should clear things up whats going on with my heart.
