worst eyesight ever

hi guys
im only 17 and have -11 myopia in both eyes
i have wore glasses since the age of 5 and my life is just getting scarier because i think im going to end up blind or wearing the most thickest frames ever.
it just seems to be getting worse, hate going to opticians, family blames me for having bad eyesight..
i just feel ugly, unconfident because of my eyes.
what if by the age of 21 it keeps progressing? what do i do.
im genuinely scared.
any help will be appreciated.

Ok so my eyes are not quite so great either (-4.5) but not -11 but I know how you feel in terms of family, I mean like my mum actually accuses me of faking just so I can wear glasses :s-smilie: cos if she takes them off me i squint so bad

But I just wanna say if you wear contacts or are thinking of them I wouldn't recommend them cos they will make your eyes worse, but if you can I'd consider maybe laser eye surgery? I know it's expensive and a bit scary (why I can't do it) but it does help your eyesight considerably if you do really really want to do something

I'm 17 too, had glasses since year 5

That's bull, contacts have no impact on how bad your eyesight can get, as long as you wear them as you're supposed to.

My uncle (26) wears contacts and he says he regrets it cos it made his eyesight way worse. He said when he was wearing glasses the rate it got worse was more steady but when he started wearing contacts it got worse faster

A couple of my mates have noticed the same thing as well
Be grateful you can actually see well enough to actually read. Some of us don't have that luxury.

Hey, I'm not nearly as short sighted as you (-4.5) but I know how scary it can be noticing your eyes getting worse. I went through a period of needing new glasses every 6 months! :hugs:

Try not to worry about the future. Have you spoken to your optician about how you feel? They're the best person, as they'll be able to give you advice and reassure you as well as tell you what your options are re: contact lenses, laser surgery, etc. :h:

It's also not your fault; I'm not sure what your family is blaming you for but it is most likely a genetic thing. :h:

I feel your pain, I'm -7 and -3.75 and have needed glasses since I was 7. From that age, my eyes just got worse and worse each year, because your eyes change as you grow up.It wasn't until I was 18 or so that the worsening of my eyes slowed down completely - because as you stop growing, your eyes won't change so much either. When I was 17 I started wearing contact lenses and it changed my life! I felt so much more confident and prettier, and I felt like a different person. At first I started with daily lenses but they tired my eyes, and now I'm on monthly ones and I feel like a person with completely perfect vision! It's so nice not to wear glasses. I'd definitely recommend contact lenses, so long as you follow the instructions from your optician they are fine!

Correlation does not equal causation. Either the decline would have happened anyway or the contact lenses may have been the wrong prescription. Wearing accurately prescribed contact lenses properly does not impact your vision.

Nah, it's just as Musie Suzie says. Plus contacts can even be better for you at times, as they aren't reflective, unlike glasses without that special coating. And contacts don't limit your vision - unlike glasses, especially those with small frames.

Maybe you should see if you can go to the opticians alone, if it makes you uncomfortable having your mum there? I'm not quite sure what your mum is blaming you for, because it really isn't your fault - she may have misunderstood something the optician said? :h:

Unfortunately my mum does not let me go out anywhere by myself. She doesn't know english so I guess she thinks she's one step ahead when she isn't. Idk :frown:
Wearing contacts will not make your eyes worse,in fact they are far more likely to enhance your vision and make you less anxious about it all.

a -11 myope is not likely to be a good candidate for laser IMHO.
I got told by my doctor that generally if you've got a - sight problem, it's genetic - it doesn't matter if you wear lenses or contacts or you don't, your eyes will get as bad as they were supposed to be and then stop. I'm so sorry for you, it must be awful - I've got -2.25 and so unhappy about it and would like a surgery...
I think you can only have a surgery when your eyes have fully developed but have you talked to some specialist about this possibility?

I'm too young and I can't get any laser eye surgery because of this severe myopia. I suppose it could be genetic because it's worsened like crazy.

First of all the fact that you have bad eyesight is not your fault, if anyone is to blame it is your ancestors because the fact that you have severe myopia means that you inherited it from someone and the last ones in the line are your parents. Since you have been wearing glasses since the age of 5, you probably have progressive myopia which is an inherited genetic trait and will continue to worsen until you reach your early 20's and then it will stabilize. Wearing glasses or contacts will have no effect on whether your eyes continue to get worse because they only correct your vision while you are wearing them. If you want to get away from wearing glasses you could wear contacts. I know several people who have myopia that is close to yours or worse and neither was a candidate for corrective surgery such as LASIK, but one had IOL's (Intraocular lens) surgically implanted which are basically implanted contact lenses and it corrected his vision. You won't go blind from myopia but your risk of having a retinal detachment is higher than the general population so it's very important to have regular eye exams.
