Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Ukraine's pursuit of NATO membership posed a danger to European security and that the West was using Kiev's bid to join the Atlantic alliance as a way to fuel confrontation between Russia and Ukraine.

The Kiev parliament's renunciation of Ukraine's neutral status this week as a step towards joining NATO has outraged Moscow and deepened the worst confrontation between Russia and the West since the end of the Cold War.

Lavrov is the latest Russian official to speak out against the Kiev's bid in recent days, and who have made clear Russia would see the NATO membership of such a strategic former Soviet republic with a long common border as a direct military threat.Read more here

Austria believes Russia is not right to oppose such a thing. This action implies the antagonisation of the western capitalist block and a potential attempt of excessive continental influence by Russia which may shake the current economical scenario and confront social order, something to be avoided in times of conflict such as the present.

Austria would like to question how does allowing Russia to form an entirely separate area of influence antagonising the current order actually contribute to unification?

Russia: Ukraine joining NATO will bring Europe nearer a state of warfare. No one in Europe was that interested in Ukraine until we intervened to protect people with Russian ethnicity. The West needs to stop pointlessly muddling in affairs instead choosing to build relations. The USA is looking to dominate and is not interested in the welfare of Ukraine.

New Zealand: We point out the flaws in Russia's side. If Russia wants to avoid war they must not meddle in Ukranian affairs. The civil war must be left alone until the people of Ukraine come to a decision without the need of the West. The hypocrisy is unbelievable coming from a man who tells President Obama not to rattle Russia's saber but still send troops into Ukraine. For a powerful country you could make a big difference in the world by standing together but instead you choose to be divisive.

Allowing Ukraine into NATO will just aggravate Russia into dividing Ukraine further. Canada sees this is as obvious especially since it was Ukraine's new interest in joining the EU that propelled the dispute last year.
