The Student Room Group

No friends at uni?

So recently I've been thinking that I do have a decent amount of people who I talk to whenever I see them at societies but they're all second years and have their own friend groups.

I'm friends with some course mates and have gone out with them once or twice, but they mostly go out with flatmates so I don't wanna keep tagging along.

I live in private halls so it's rather unsociable, and my flatmates don't go out. Also, I was 17 during freshers and couldn't go out because of that... Is that part of the reason for this lol...

Idk what to do in this situation, should I just hang out in public more, like going to the library, joining more societies or something? Do people at libraries generally go alone / stick to themselves? Ahh, I'm so confused haha. Oh and I'm international, if that helps!

Sorry to hear about this. What societies have you joined? Perhaps select some that allow time and opportunity to meet and get to know people. I went to Leeds and found the Hiking Soc good for this. Also make more effort to drag the people you live with out for a drink. Does being international offer any opportunities - meeting people that love and want to get to know the culture and language of where you are from? Keep at it, people usually respond to those that are friendly.

i'm part of one course-based and one athletics society! i feel like this flat is a lost cause lol since one flatmate can't drink for religious reasons :/ i'm from hk and although there's a hk society, the last event was in october lol... is it okay to go to socials alone though? i did that once and managed to tag along with people but seemed like most people went with others haha

There are times I like to be Obama's elf(all by myself). It is totally ok to go alone if no one is willing to go with you. Try to mingle and join any society. I heard in uni there are societies for all sorts of things. What about your classmates. Can you organise study groups and maybe good friendships would bloom from there

Athletics might be a bit healthy and intense. Perhaps go for something a bit more hedonistic as well. Fine to go to socials alone as long as you are confident to mingle a bit. Must say my closest mates and socialising partners were from first year in halls and from my course. Keep at it..
There there, you want a cracker. In all seriousness, youll find some buds eventually. Join a few societies l, put yourself out there
