The Student Room Group

I feel desperate. I just dont know what to do next..Why isnt there any support for me

My case is really unique and I just feel let down and sad and frustrated. I am a part time student with depression and the things I am about to share are going to make my depression worse. Tomorrow I start my second block placement which will be 9 weeks where we are supposed to do 24 hours a week volunteering before we get assessed in placement. Unpaid. I do not get any financial support from SF or any bursary or nothing. I literally have no money and having to do all these hours makes it harder to work, and I also left my job last year as I was suffering with depression and bulimia and havent really worked since. I am on the books of an agency and I have been managing to work one day a week.

I am just so sad and down and low and worried my depression will worsen when im back in placement with no money, I didnt get a 2.1 degree so I wasnt eligible for the bursary and you cant get any support from anywhere I just dont know what to do. I almost failed last year because of my troubles. I cant get any benefits or student finance or anything from uni I am just in a desperate state and its going to be like this up until September now, does anyone have any guidance for me
Hi trifleontoast

I'm sorry you're having a tough time, I don't know where you're studying, but is there no hardship fund or similar at the uni?
I don't know if you'd qualify for this: https://www.gov.uk/income-support

If neither of these are any help to you or you want better advice on what's available to you, it would be worth making an appointment with your local CAB http://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/

Income support is for lone parents where the youngest is under 5 and carers. The OP would either be entitled to ESA if unable to work, or job seekers allowance.

only if you're full time. Part time students don't need to be claiming dla / pip.

At my uni we have something called the "Access to Learning Fund" which you can apply for for all kinds of reasons, particularly if your financial situation means you might not be able to carry on with uni! Make an appointment to see a financial advisor at your uni if they can to see if they have something similar.

Also are you getting Disabled Students Allowance at all? It sounds like your depression is quite an issue and I know that you can get it on grounds of mental health as well as physical.

Hope this helps.

I'll look into it but it's a course with no credits so I don't know if I will be eligible
