Carbon dioxide in the exhaled gases is removed by passing the gases through soda lime or carbosorb before they are returned to the spirometer. Explain why the carbon dioxide levels in the blood would rise if the carbon dioxide in the exhaled gases was not removed.

please help!!

The air from the chamber is inhaled. During respiration, the body converts O2 to CO2, which is exhaled into the container. Over some time, the oxygen in the container gets replaced by carbon dioxide.

As the air entering the lungs has a higher concentration of carbon dioxide and a lower concentration of oxygen, the body cannot is using oxygen and producing carbon dioxide at a faster rate than it can obtain/remove them via gaseous exchange. Hence blood carbon dioxide levels increase.
