The show appeals to a dying class of British aristocracy. People who have too much wealth for their own good. I only watched a bit of the first episode. I didn't want to waste my time watching degenerate British capitalists. They should ban shows like Downton Abbey on grounds of racism, or at least give them an 18+ rating. No sane person would let their children watch such dogma in this day and age. It's completely out of touch with the real world, yet in no way is it referred to as a fantasy/fictitious. It promotes social inequality, social castes, capitalism, socialism and all the other bad stuff this beautifully liberal and politically correct society is trying to eradicate. It's a bigoted show created by someone who with too much wealth enabling them to feel patriotic and proud of their history.

I feel like you are missing the point of noble pursuits such as 'writing', 'filming' or, and this is the biggie, 'acting'. You keep referring to it as a show, without recognizing what that entails - first and foremost, a sense that it IS fictitious, and anyone who uses their brains for a span of longer than a second at a time would recognize that a show full of prominent actors, set 100 years ago, might not be attempting to be a documentary or propaganda.

Just one in an ever-extending line of period dramas put on by the BBC.

Rather like Christmas gatherings for me. Full of dusty old people, boring conversations, and I absolutely hate it.

It's not made by the BBC. I am getting the ever-increasing impression that those most critical of the show don't know the most basic things about it and have probably not even sat through a single episode before choosing to voice hostile crticisim towards it.

It's not unreasonable to expect you to explain your opinion of a TV show in a TV show discussion thread.

Other dramas, certainly, but not EastEnders. I am willing to be persuaded if you can elaborate or give some examples.

Obviously.

What are these 'wily ways' that EastEnders and Downton Abbey share?

Of course the show revolves around dramatisation of personal lives - it's a drama. That doesn't make it comparable to EastEnders in any meaningful sense just because it examines the lives of human beings. It certainly isn't true, however, that the show focuses on wealthy people any more than unwealthy people, if that is even relevant purely for the sake of it.

So far all you've been able to hint at as criticisms is that DA involves a lot of very wealthy people and that it shares some as yet unspecified 'rhetoric' and script-writing with EastEnders. Both of these positions I find hard to take seriously.

Your writing here is bombastic and your meaning unclear.

Not unreasonable no. But I have no intentions to delve into why I find it boring past ephemeral reasons. I simply don't care that much. I think they both select a specific audience and cater the pathos in such a direction; clearly the guise of a more diachronic look on the period of which Downton is set, appeals to you (for reasons I could assume but won't) similarly East-enders panders to an audience that prefer the synchronic and mediocre. If your objection is based on (as it appears) preferntial exaltation of one of these approaches then it only speaks of subjectivism and not an objective standard in which you could reasonably dissuade the suggestion. The relevancy of the characters being wealthy is that it's a symptomatic expression of how the show appeals to an audience, that's my point apropos to me mentioning it. I don't think it's bombastic just because you don't comprehend it. My point is that these thematic ideas you present aren't thematic premises but mere catalysts for the only premise; drama of people's. You could have no talk of the social/global situation and still the same plot devices and rhetoric. You couldn't have that in a show that wasn't a pure drama; a documentation of post-WW2 housing dynamics in which pertinency is un-abridged by characterization plots.

I don't care. It is propaganda to me. A lot of people are brainwashed by the flowery discourse and visual froth. They don't realise that it is a conservative's wet dream. It is some guy's attempt to resurrect a bygone era. Probably someone high up in the BBC.

I only watched it once, but Maggie Smith does better acting in Harry Potter.

That's like me saying people who love the Lord of the Rings are just brainwashed by the Department for Tourism in New Zealand, and that it is just some guy's attempt to resurrect the medieval era where we live in castles and fight with swords.

Utter nonsense, essentially.

ITV then. What a big difference that makes.

Yes.
I like it, I watch it casually, if I'm in the living room when it's on I will stay and watch it but I'm not fussed if I miss an episode. I find it really interesting, though. Seeing how people used to live and such.

Do you seriously believe everyone used to live like the folk on Downton Abbey? Only 1% of people did. The rest used to live in slums, poverty, disease, famine.

Stop being brainwashed by BBC conservative propaganda and vote labour instead.

First of all, I do vote Labour lol. I also know that only a minority lived like that, but I still find it interesting knowing that some (albeit not many) people used to live like that. Also, Downton is produced by ITV not BBC.

Of course it is produced by ITV but it is in fact funded by the BBC. The BBC can't produce the show themselves due to 'contract problems'.

Gladly :desu: :desu: :desu: :desu: :desu: :desu: :desu:
I only watch it around christmas time
I have watched every episode and own the seasons 1-4 boxset. I have watched it religiously, but when voting for that option I was confused: who is this 'Dowager Duchess' I am therefore writing letters to? I have never been unfaithful to good old Violet, the Dowager Countess of Grantham. (The stuff she says is amazing, hilarious and perfectly timed.)

As per post 4, this was a test of your Downton appreciation skills, and you have passed with flying colours

It was the first thing I noticed.
I honestly love it, it's one of the only things I watch religiously on the television. I'm a bit of a sucker for period dramas! Love how the fashions have changed over the seasons, too.

I have been disappointed by the scarcity of Downton discussion on this forum. It seems that people here neither enjoy it nor dislike it but, worse, are apathetic towards it. Am I wrong? Please vote in the poll, peers and plebeians alike, and clarify the situation for your resident Lord.

Easiest, dear; watch this.
I absolutely love it!!
