I actually really like how UEA only lets you pick broad choices like 'En Suite Campus' rather than specific buildings. With other universities, there's just too much choice! I'd rather just say 'I want an en-suite' and then go wherever they put me.

Apparently, this is partly due to the UEA buildings being pretty consistent, i.e., all the 'En Suite Campus' rooms are pretty much the same etc. Anyone already there who can offer some insight into this? :P

sort of- the rooms in most of the campus ensuite buildings are pretty identical except Nelson Court and Constable Terrace which are bigger but the kitchens aren't as big

Overall I'd agree that most of the accommodation across the board is broadly similar, when you compare I to other unis. They all have the same contracts, rules, cleaning schedules (except for shared bathrooms being cleaned more often than ensuites), similar facilities, all good levels of cleanliness and apart from Mary Chapman they are all very close to each other. Other units I've been to have had accommodation dotted around the city, some miles away, and some are run completely differently... Some will be really old buildings that aren't really fit for purpose while others are brand new super duper buildings, all with different rules about visitors etc.

Really don't know what type of accommodation I want to stay in. I really like all other aspects of the university so I'm happy to go there but I didn't think the accommodation was great when I went to the applicant day. Don't know whether to just go for the cheapest, since it all looks pretty terrible...

I must say I'm surprised. Of the five unis I visited on open days UEA's accommodation was by far the best on offer.

To be fair, it was more the kitchens which I didn't like than the bedrooms themselves... the bedrooms were fine, I just thought that the kitchens were quite old and bare and limited, in both the en-suite campus and ziggurat rooms... It would be fine if I didn't do a lot of cooking, but the fact you don't even get an oven!

I just want which ever type of room has the best cooking facilities, otherwise I'm bringing a halogen oven haha

The bedrooms were more than adequate to be fair to them, I just wasn't impressed with the kitchens, but that's me being fussy as a student who will do a lot of cooking.

When compared to the private rental sector, even the student private rental sector which in itself is overpriced, it does cost a fair bit more. However, that is a student accommodation issue rather than a UEA one. Again, they were the cheapest I found (or should I say, universally the cheapest... Other unis had some which was cheaper but much more grotty, or some cheap but only very limited supply meaning you may get landed in something which cost more han the Max maintenance loan and grant).

There is always the option of going private, however, most students don't as they pay for the luxury of no risk of not getting in & being lumped with a tenancy they can't fulfil, plus you get the experience of living so close to lectures with other first years and you have someone clean the bathroom ans kitchen which can help when adjusting to living with strangers for the first time.

As already said, the oven function works just as well as a standard oven. Never met anyone who has used it and found otherwise.

Other than that, the kitchens aren't old, they are just plain and industrial looking. The metal surfaces are what you get in a large commercial kitchen which is used to cook hundreds of meals a day. There is plenty of workspace to cook things up and space to store specialist equipment. The only thing you might struggle with is storage space for food, I would say.

In terms of kitchens Mary Chapman has "actual" ovens if it really worries you, also some of the village does, and those in the village which do also have more homely looking kitchens, but its pot luck whether you'd get one of those.

If they work like actual ovens then that's fine, but I was under the impression that they were just microwaves. That's not a problem then.

you just have to press a button to switch between microwave and oven. And as for the cost when I was looking round uea halls were at the cheaper end and mostly on campus- Birmingham wanted 1000 extra than campus ensuite at uea to live 20 mins away in the vale
