Maths: Standard Form Question

Work out 5.2 x 10^2 +2.3 x 10^4

Give your answer in standard form.

Is this question asking you to work out (5.2 x 10^2) + (2.3 x 10^4)
OR
5.2 x 10^2 x 10^4 +2.3 (because of Order of Operations?)

It's in some higher tier IGCSE maths paper but got no date.
I'd go for order of operations.

Any other Opinions, perhasps someone who remembers doing the paper who got it right?

If the answer is in standard form it means solve the question in standard form. I won't go for order of operations

I have two different answers currently, Just want to confirm, with maybe someone who remembers doing it. it's not cause i don't trust you

I haven't done this specific question but I have done questions like this before that y I told you what you to do. Have you tried writing the question in the Internet, sometimes you can get answers from there too:smile:

Yeah I have, I haven't found anything hence the plea on here
I do probably think you are right though so +rep.
Fallen99 is right - if the answer is like that it means solve it in terms of standard form.

This is how I'd work it out now - different way to how you normally do it.
5.2 x 10^2 +2.3 x 10^4
= 5.2 x 10^2 + 230 x 10^2
= 235.2 x 10^2
= 2.352 x 10^4

I do this way. It is simple and easier

Effectively getting 'Like Terms' as it were (with 10^2)?
When you are asked to answer standard form questions, you never use BODMAS/BIDMAS/Order Of Operations. You just put 2 brackets which are of two seperate expressions and solve them.
Make sure that the number you are writing in standard form is between 1 and 10, then you write × 10(to the power of a number).
