New survey reveals 1/4 of UK Muslims sympathize with Charlie Hebdo attack

A poll conducted by ComRes for BBC Radio 4 questioned 1,000 Muslims living in Britain on a range of issues affecting their daily lives. Key findings revealed their attitudes towards extremism, prejudice and terrorist attacks.

8 per cent of respondents said they know Muslims who feel strongly sympathetic towards people fighting for IS and al-Qaeda

One in three
said they would like their children to go a Muslim state school if they had the choice

13 per cent
agreed with the statement, 'I would rather socialise with Muslims than non-Muslims'

More than a third
of those interviewed felt that most Britons do not trust Muslims

46 per cent
believe the nation is becoming less tolerant of Muslims. The same percentage thinks prejudice against Islam makes it difficult to be a Muslim in Britain

More than a quarter
of British Muslims have sympathy for the motives behind the attack on the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris

Almost 80 per cent found it deeply offensive when images depicting the Prophet were published

More than 10 per cent of the 1,000 people polled agreed Charlie Hebdo 'deserved' to be attacked

Only 55 per cent of those polled felt the Muslim Council of Britain adequately represented the views of Muslims in the country

92 per cent of respondents said they know Muslims who feel unsympathetic towards people fighting for IS and al-Qaeda

two in three
said they would not like their children to go a Muslim state school if they had the choice

87 per cent
disagreed with the statement, 'I would rather socialise with Muslims than non-Muslims'

two-thirds
of those interviewed felt that most Britons trusted Muslims

46 per cent
believe the nation is becoming less tolerant of Muslims. The same percentage thinks prejudice against Islam makes it difficult to be a Muslim in Britain

three-quarters
of British Muslims do not have sympathy for the motives behind the attack on the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris

Almost 80 per cent found it deeply offensive when images depicting the Prophet were published

Around 90 per cent of the 1,000 people polled agreed Charlie Hebdo did not 'deserved' to be attacked

Only 45 per cent of those polled felt the Muslim Council of Britain did not adequately represent the views of Muslims in the country

Yeah you can look at it both ways it depends on perspective.

The only part I really have an issue with is the Charlie hebdo bit. That needs to be further explored in what is meant by sympathise

Tbf the socialise thing doesn't seem an issue? Barely over 1 in 10 said they'd rather hang around with Muslims than non-Muslims.

Bet you anything if you asked 1000 irreligious Brits "Would you rather socialise with a group of Muslims or a group of non-Muslims" more than 13% would pick non-Muslims.

Indeed, these surveys are always a bit dubious and should be taken with a pinch of salt usually, obviously the Daily Mail brigade and those with a particular anti-Islam bias will always take such stats and twist them to suit their agenda and claim UK Muslims agree with mass murder, but the stat here is that they have sympathy with the motives of the attack, which is not necessarily the same as they have sympathy with the attack itself, possibly just they don't like the publishing of the cartoons. Contrary to some opinions, being against the publishing of the Charlie Hebdo cartoons and agreeing with murdering innocent people are 2 completely different things.

The 10% who believe Charlie Hebdo deserved to be attack is, while very low, slightly concerning, but other than that there's not a lot to get worked up about here really. The other stats mean nothing imo, like for example, its completely natural that many Muslims would prefer to socialise with other Muslims, just like any other ethnic or religious group would prefer socialising with others like them, you'd probably find a fair few white people who'd prefer socialising with other white people in this country too.

Yes according to a recent study 3/4 of White Americans don't have any non-white friends.

And I wonder if you do it with the population as a whole what the Charlie Hebdo figure is, and how exactly was the question worded, that's important too

Ignorant Muslims along with those who sympathize with 9/11. Both being Mossad terror operations.

They are using free speech are using it as an excuse to bash Islam.

Do you know one of the staff of Charlie Hebdo was fired for saying former French President Sarkozy's son (Sarkozy is of Jewish descent - aren't they all?) Converted to Judaism for financial reasons.

France is under Jewish occupation.

Only nationalism can set us free.

I agree with what you said but I'm not a nationalist.
To be honest there are probably a higher percentage of white Britons who'd rather socialise only amongst themselves, send their kids to a segregated school or atleast one without any ethnic minorities and would get deeply offended and maybe even resort to violence if someone majorly insulted, say, Her Majesty. And judging by comments and people I've met, I'm pretty sure that most Britons do indeed have at least some underlying degree of mistrust towards Islam and Muslims.

I wonder why that is... Oh wait, maybe it's something to do with:

Hmm, USA is an extreme example. Most of the cities are still quite segregated due to Jim crow laws.

I think if the study was done here (UK) that we would have similar results.
Is it really a surprise?
It's a daily mail article. Whilst i have no doubt some of it is true, remember that they like to alienate certain groups of society: Muslims, gays, EU supporters, labour party supporters, young people, people on low incomes etc.

I think the percentage would be a little smaller. But, fair point, you're probably right

When I saw the statistic I had to think quite hard if I actually had any non-white friends.
Probably a good time to repeat the quote from the exiled Archbishop of Mosul:

Our sufferings today are the prelude of those you, Europeans and Western Christians, will also suffer in the near future. I lost my diocese. The physical setting of my apostolate has been occupied by Islamic radicals who want us converted or dead. But my community is still alive.

Please, try to understand us. Your liberal and democratic principles are worth nothing here. You must consider again our reality in the Middle East, because you are welcoming in your countries an ever growing number of Muslims. Also you are in danger. You must take strong and courageous decisions, even at the cost of contradicting your principles. You think all men are equal, but that is not true: Islam does not say that all men are equal. Your values are not their values. If you do not understand this soon enough, you will become the victims of the enemy you have welcomed in your home.
