SNP are 4 tines larger than the Scottish Conservatives, the Scottish Labour Party and the Scotish Liberal Democrats put together. Yet in the 2014 referendum on Scottish independence 56% of people voted against independence. Isn't independence the main idea behind the SNP? How can it be so large when the majority of people don't want independence? What am I missing here?

Because even if they don't get independence, the SNP still push for policies that benefit Scotland.
Because the Scottish hate the English. Always have done. They are a very closed minded people and think only in terms of themselves rather than for the entire UK. There was a time when to be defined as a "nationalist" was a dirty term, but in Scotland it is seen as a good thing. They are a backwards nation who live of the fruits of the UK and are little more than locusts or parasites.

Scotland should either have full independence or fully integrate itself onto the UK. No devolution or semi-independence. You are either with us, or out.

A misconception with the SNP is that they are just a party for independence. They are not. In the political spectrum of UK politics, they are the most left wing mainstream party (the Greens are a vote for a revolution in my opinion). They have run the Scottish parliament like clockwork, where they have fiscally balanced the books, despite the Westminster austerity and cuts to the Barnett Formula. Meanwhile, they have being pushing traditional left wing, people policies throughout their tenure. Also, the SNP were able to gain a majority in the Scottish Parliament in 2011 even though the AMS system is used (which 9 times out of 10 produces a coalition). So, the SNP have been popular for a long time with the scottish electorate.

A majority of people in Scotland want major constitutional change. Independence was a leap too far for some people OR the referendum was done a few years too early. Now, people are voting for SNP in there droves because they will hold Westminster's feet to the fire regarding extra powers devolved to the Scottish Parliament. Anyway, i would say Scotland will certainly be independent within 10 years

And you wonder why there's resentment from some scots?

But your comments betray your ignorance. Certain people in scotland hold archaic anti-English views with little justification, such as poll tax, closing scotlands industry or taking free milk out of schools, but the vast vast majority are not anti-English at all.

You should never resent being told the truth.

And it's called civic nationalism.

The only dirty nationalists are UKIP and BNP and they are exclusive to England by all accounts

You do realise Brits are inclusive of the Scots? It's the English you want out.

And how might that be the case?

Scotland elected one UKIP MEP.

What that they live off the English taxpayer? They take more than they give. The English have to spend money and invest in Scotland, as well as pay for a proportion of their benefits since they can't pay it for themselves. Their entire economy relies on the oil fields.

They are nationalist and socialist, but nobody has the balls to call them nationalist socialists.

Although they want independence, it's not the main reason people are voting for them. The only time they'll bring about independence is when the Scottish people want it

But they're more left than labour and they'll bring about better changes than them, so people like that side of their policies

And it's for this reason a lot of people in England like them too
Every time I watch something about Scottish politics on the news, it seems as if their whole election is based on who hates the Tories the most, who is least like the Tories, and who would be most likely to avoid a Tory government. It doesn't exactly feel like a mature political election to me.

So the poor are now parasites.

That's fine I won't waste my time here.

They are when they don't do anything to help themselves. Some of us here have been poor and know what its like to be poor, but have worked hard to get out and are mature enough to realise that the English aren't the problem. The problem is themselves and not doing anything about their situation.

There are two types of poor -the deserving poor, and the undeserving poor. Most Scots come under the term of "underserving"

So the Scottish are the 'undeserving poor', who don't work hard to try to get out of it, and don't help themselves? How do you work that out, aside from racist generalizations?

What a load of crap. There are poor people who don't try everywhere.

I'm voting SNP, in this general election. Inorder to recieve the powers that were promised during the referendum campaign. "Hate" is a very strong word, I would never contemplate on hating a person just because of where they came from and if I did it would be considered negative discrimination. (Also I support the freedom of movement, so if I did hate some one purely based on where they came from, then I would be rightly considered a hypocrite.)

Its more likely your confusing "hate", with our frustration of the Westminster political system and class. This stems from the 35 years we have voted for a labour government and most of the time, we recieve a Tory government we didn't vote for.

The SNP, are portraying themselves in this election as Scotland's voice. Who will put the needs of Scotland first. To me this seems like a good deal as my intrests will be fully represented in the House of Commons. So if it would make you feel better, I shall apologise for wanting Scotland to be yet more successful.

If what you mean by 'backwards' is more inclined to vote for a party on the left. Then yes, I do like parties that are on the left of the political spectrum. The SNP isn't a perfect political party, (they refused to give prisoners the vote as they were unsure how the public would react) so on some occasions I support policies from the Scottish Greens. Such as there policy of a £10 minimum wage, I feel this is a good policy because if lower earners have more wealth they will be more inclined to spend which could renergies our economy. There by creating growth.

Your misdirecting your frustration, as to devolution. As I campaigned for full independence, inorder to make our own decisions to create our own destiny. It was the unionist parties who promised more powers, the SNP are just holding them to their words.

Very few of us Scots think the English are the problem. It's the ****ing tories. :cookie:
The reason the SNP are doing so well is that the referendum caused a political realignment. All those people who supported independence but used to vote Labour or other parties were so butthurt they lost that they went and joined the SNP.

Now it's still a minority of the population, but under First Past the Post having 45% of the population voting for one party tends to create a landslide.

Having said that, let's wait and see how they actually do in the election; in constituency polling, Labour is often only a few points behind the SNP and I would be shocked if there was not massive levels of tactical voting by Conservative and Lib Dem unionists to keep the SNP (in the same way the non-Tory parties used to gang up on the Conservatives to keep then out)
