British Army Apprenticeships
Hi Everyone,
I thought that I would give you the low down on Apprenticeships in the British Army!
The Army has the largest apprenticeship programme in the country, with about 95 per cent of new soldiers taking part and over 5,000 completing their apprenticeship training each year. Army apprenticeships are part of a nationally recognised scheme, giving soldiers the chance to work for an employer at the same time as studying for a relevant, work-based qualification.
Each apprenticeship fits in with military training and is closely related to a soldier’s Army role, so as well as becoming a better soldier, they are working towards a qualification that will be valued by civilian employers. Apprenticeships in the Army are delivered on full pay which is great!!
There are two apprenticeship levels:
Apprenticeship Level 2:
Level 2 apprenticeships are equivalent to five good GCSE passes.
Military trade training forms the core of this level. A range of key skills qualifications (including literacy and numeracy) are completed, and a technical certificate is gained. By the end of the apprenticeship, soldiers are skilled Army tradesman, and are rewarded with an NVQ Level 2.
Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3:
Level 3 apprenticeships are equivalent to two A-level passes.
These apprenticeships apply to the Army’s technical trades. Advanced apprentices gain the relevant technical certificates through their trade training as well as an NVQ Level 3 and key skills. To qualify for an advanced apprenticeship, five GCSEs at grade C or above are required. Alternatively, a Level 2 Army apprenticeship is acceptable.
An Army apprenticeship is only the start. Every job in the Army offers the opportunity to progress to gain professional skills leading to higher qualifications, including full Bachelors and Masters degrees.

The aim of apprenticeships is to provide training that is closely linked to a job, so the apprenticeships offered reflect whatever Army role is chosen.

There has been a change to the rules for people joining from across the Commonwealth. We now have a selection of Army roles, that you don't need to meet the residency requirements for. Please check out the following link for information on the roles that are available to you: www.army.mod.uk/commonwealth

I have one of these apprenticeships and believe me they are not worth the paper they are written on. Do not join the Army just for an NVQ it isn't worth giving up four years of your life and civil liberties.
Hi, I have recently been in the process to join the Royal Navy, but I failed the medical due to an eye condition 'Browns Syndrome' (slower reaction to look up in my right eye). Would this prevent me from joining the army as well? Not sure whether it would be the same across the board. Thanks
The army requires you to use your eyes just as much as if not more so than the Navy, I wouldn't hold your breath mate.
Freddie010 refers to 'four years of your life'; is that the standard length of an apprenticeship in the armed forces? I ask because I want to do an engineering apprenticeship with the Navy, then go to Uni as a Civilian then return to the navy to pursue an officers role. Will that be possible or do you have to stay in the military and get your degree through them? Also are there any shorter Advanced Apprenticeships for if you already have A level qualifications but just want hands on experience and practical qualifications to accompany them?

The Army has the largest apprenticeship programme in the country, with about 95 per cent of new soldiers taking part and over 5,000 completing their apprenticeship training each year. Army apprenticeships are part of a nationally recognised scheme, giving soldiers the chance to work for an employer at the same time as studying for a relevant, work-based qualification.
Each apprenticeship fits in with military training and is closely related to a soldier’s Army role, so as well as becoming a better soldier, they are working towards a qualification that will be valued by civilian employers. Apprenticeships in the Army are delivered on full pay which is great!!
There are two apprenticeship levels:
Apprenticeship Level 2:
Level 2 apprenticeships are equivalent to five good GCSE passes.
Military trade training forms the core of this level. A range of key skills qualifications (including literacy and numeracy) are completed, and a technical certificate is gained. By the end of the apprenticeship, soldiers are skilled Army tradesman, and are rewarded with an NVQ Level 2.
Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3:
Level 3 apprenticeships are equivalent to two A-level passes.
These apprenticeships apply to the Army’s technical trades. Advanced apprentices gain the relevant technical certificates through their trade training as well as an NVQ Level 3 and key skills. To qualify for an advanced apprenticeship, five GCSEs at grade C or above are required. Alternatively, a Level 2 Army apprenticeship is acceptable.
An Army apprenticeship is only the start. Every job in the Army offers the opportunity to progress to gain professional skills leading to higher qualifications, including full Bachelors and Masters degrees.

Haggis army
Hi on the army website it says the the qualification For an electrician is 17th edition . But I have been told that the 17 edition Is no good anymore . Also will I be able to gain an nvq or a good enough qualification to also work as an electrician in the civilian world and not have to train to be an electrician again I hope this makes sense .
If I'm a British citizen but I've been away from the UK for over 6 months, (I've been in Thailand and Australia for about 4 years now...) hold long would I have to be back in the UK for before applying to join? Also it says that a level 2 NVQ is worth 5 good GCSE passes. I unfortunately did not do well at Maths and English when I left school so didn't get good passes in Maths
