How do you name this moleclue?

This is either 2-hydroxybut-2-ene or But-2-en-2-ol

But I have no clue which one!

(How do you know when to use 'ol' and when to use 'hydroxy' when naming alcohols?)

but-2-en-2-ol
Hydroxy is used before the main part, only if there is another functional group at the end

Does that rule apply for all functional groups at the end? For instance alkene, carboxilic acid? Or just some?

Great thanks! Do you know why though? :s-smilie:
Agamemnon?

It works for example like 2-hydroxypropanal, for if you had an O-H group and a =O on the second carbon, because you can't say propan-2-ol-al

When there are more than 1 functional groups, there is a need to rank the functional groups.

Since alcohol is the higher rank here, the molecule would be an "-ol". Conversely, if there is a functional group higher than alcohol, the alcohol group would be treated as prefix and named as "hydroxyl".
