A Sunni Ahwazi tribal leader was arrested last week after performing congregational prayers at his son’s wedding in the city of Ahwaz.
50-year old Shaykh Qassem Jaber al Abbas, a leader of the al-Bawi tribe from the ‘Arab Rashed’ village, was arrested by security forces at 10pm on 23 April 2015.
He has been taken to an unknown location.
He was arrested shortly after holding congregational Isha prayers at his son’s wedding party. Sources said Iranian security forces were angered by the large number of Sunni Ahwazi Arabs performing congregational prayers.
Like most ethnic minorities living in Iran, the Ahwazi Arab minority, who mostly live in the south-west of Iran, have historically endured economic, political and cultural discrimination from the Iranian government.
The Shia Iranian government has been alarmed by the rise of Sunni Islam among the Ahwazi Arabs in the traditionally Shia-majority Khuzestan province, leading to an increased crackdown on Sunni Ahwazi figures.
