Iran doesn't control the middle east. It is the dominant power in the Gulf of Arabia. However the Gulf Monarchies where created by the British Empire and the Americans now maintain the balance and stop Iran from being able to use its position manipulate the Gulf Monarchies. As if Iran were able to do this it could control the price of oil. Now you have Iran and Saudi attempting to have manipulation in the Northern corridor which is Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. However this area is bordered by Turkey so Iran is more limited in its power as the Turkish border runs all along the North corridor, whereas Iran only borders Iraq. This is why Iran is weaker in Lebanon and Syria, then Iraq.

What Saudi wants in the North corridor is chaos. As this means neither Iran or Turkey can threaten Saudi from the North. Right now Saudi has what it wants. Iran has been diminished and Turkey is waiting to act in a more active way until the political situation settles down.

Arguably Iran wants chaos in the countries bordering Saudi. Especially Yemen, given the land border they share because of the shia population in southern Saudi.

Iran doesn't want anything in Yemen, its importance is limited. Iran is taking what actions it can to knock Saudi Arabia off balance so it has to expend even more resources in Yemen. Meaning Saudi is less able to act in the Gulf and North corridor. What's happening in Yemen in an internal problem which needs to be sorted out. Saudi is coming in to sort it. Though I wouldn't expect Saudi to get over involved, just contain the situation. Saudi understand the tribal, ethnic and religious aspects of Yemen, so it will leverage its position and support specific actors where and when it needs to do so. Saudi isn't strong enough to force a government in Yemen, but because Saudi is intervening not actor in Yemen will be strong enough to form a government. However Saudi is weak and getting weaker, so that government could be formed at some point.

How would you fund a war with Iran; Pakistan AND Saudi Arabia? Sounds expensive...
