Renting without references/a guarantor?

How hard is this? Would one need to pay for at least 3-6 months upfront?

Personally I found it very difficult to do so. Offering to pay a higher deposit might be acceptable, entirely depends on the landlord.

Thanks, do you think it would be easier in a big city?

And do even landlords on places like Gumtree need references?
It really depends on the landlord. But most will ask you for guarantors.

Some places will even ask for the full contracts rent up front if you can't provide a guarantor. Others will be more lenient and expect a few months of half the contract. It really does just depend on the landlord.
