How to be a better conversationalist?

I'm usually pretty good at conversation and can be quite witty, but when first meeting someone or talking to someone I don't know very well, I usually just say 'yes' or 'no' and nowt much else, which I appreciate is quite boring to the other person.

So how do I become a better conversationalist and have worthwhile things to say?

I swear this is usual, it would overwhelm me if someone I didn't really know was talking non-stop to me

Ask questions.
Comment on what they say.
Comment on surrounding environment.
Practice makes perfect. Seriously, I have tried googling all sorts of techniques to become a better conversationalist and none of them were useful. So in the end I just tried to talk to people more and it worked. You gradually learn what works well in a conversation.

If you are stuck, just ask a question that person about themselves or their interests because after all, the thing people generally like talking about the most is themselves. :tongue:

I've heard that's a good way to make friends with people, be genuinely interested in people and ask questions so I will try that next time I'm in a conversation.

I find this all the time! Just try anything you have in common, and just ask lots of questions works best for me!
