Anyone got any notes/quotes on Gerald Croft and Mrs Birling in An Inspector Calls?

Yeah it definitely wasn't a straight forward exam. I found some of the 4 markers a bit weird because I hadn't seen that format of question before. Don't worry though because I think quite a few people didn't finish or got confused so hopefully the grade boundaries will be lower :smile:

When he starts to talk about her death, he appears genuinely upset and goes out for a walk: ‘I’m rather more – upset – by this business than I probably appear to be‘.


After he finds out that the inspector was fake he forgets about Eva... ‘Everything’s all right now Sheila. (Holds up the ring.) What about this ring?’ She replies, ‘It’s too soon. I must think.’ She wants him to change his attitude and take responsibility for his actions.

For Mrs Birling You need to talk about her attitudes towards social classes, her attitude and her manner.

When she is first introduced in act 2 she is described as "self confident" which suggests she is arrogant and the type of person who is fully aware of her status and so flaunts it and so believes that the Inspector is no trouble at all and is not a problem for someone like her. This may be humorous to the audience as she is repeating her Husband's attitude which the audience already knows, resulted in him being easily "torn down" by the inspector.

Additionally you want to talk about the naivety of Mrs Birling, she is shown to be "staggered" when finding out about the Alderman's manner and also by Eric's alcoholic problem. This shows irony as she often treats Sheila like a child, when it is clear by this naivety that she is the child herself.

Furthermore her lack of care for her part in Eva's death as well as her self righteous behaviour highlights the Social class division in the early 1900s and adds to the fact that many people believed in those times that the lower classes only had themselves to blame for their poor lives.
Also could anyone give me some good adjectives to describe the characters in OMAM and AIC - that would make my writing a better standard instead of using simple adjectives! Thank you!!!!
Could anyone suggests some key points to say about Curley if his opening extract came up? I would talk about cowardice, power within the hierarchy but I can't think of a third? Any insightful points or ones which I could improve on? Any help is appreciated :smile:.

Especialy in the fight scene? Where is tension demonstrated?

It could also be the scene with curleys wife and Lennie, tension/setting? Could be the setting of the brush or barn?

Yeah, I agree I think its going to be the death of CW or death of Lennie at the end or fight scene. I am not so sure Candy is because he already has in some past papers..

Guys i need serious help with OMAM and romeo and juliet we literally got told last minute we all had to sit the exam on monday and we done no revision what so ever in school. The teacher goes you can get a G grade and its fine but i want atleast C if its possible. Aaarrrrghhhh im so mad at themm, like why tell us last minute😡

Mr Birling - Capitalistic, Selfish, Self Righteous, firm believer of 1900s ideology - everyone is responsible for themselves and can only blame themselves for any shortcomings, Stubborn, Persistent, Unchanging, etc.
Mrs Birling - Highly Strung, Posh, Self Righteous, extremely similar to her Husband.
Sheila - At first she is Naive, Childish, immature and Attention seeking. She then begins to change, showing moral superiority, knowledge of the real world and being more mature than most of the other characters.
Eric - Wild, Irresponsible selfish at first, however sides of moral good is shown, unsure of himself - "Half shy, Half assertive"
Gerald - Sensible, mature at first shown to be morally good however at the end he is shown to not care how acted showing his hypocrisy (his change is almost the opposite of Sheila's)
Eve - Innocent, Unique enough to be remembered by every character, beautiful enough to cause Sheila, a high class well off individual insecurities. She is also implied to be the Mother of all humans Eve due to her biblical links, and by the fact that she was pregnant and then died, suggests that actions by the Birlings and Gerald could kill Humanity.
Inspector - Unwavering, more socialist views (a similar Person to Mr Birling except different views). The name "Goole" suggests supernatural links, but the words "massive" and "solidity" suggests he is a supernatural being that is very much real. Generally morally righteous.


George - Clever, Parent like, Morally righteous, Patient, Understanding, Empathetic, and also an underlying sign of Danger as he killed Lennie.
Lennie - Childish, immature, Animal like, has a basic moral idea, Innocence being taken away, Two sides one violent (killing CW and the puppy) but also harmless when playing with the puppy and his general attitude.
Slim - Majestic, God like, Prince of the ranch, Idea of Immortality as he seems experienced in any matter. Implication of danger, he can kill a "fly" easily but also understanding towards everyone.
Curly - Arrogant, envious, Dangerous, Victorious
Carlson - represents violence also through his gun and killing Candy's dog, as well as being slightly Ignorant and Two faced (hates Curly sometimes but immediately helps him towards the end)
Candy - Represents hopes and dreams of the worker, slowly shown to be false and wishful thinking. Weak and submissive, easily scared, not much self worth, wishful thinker, optimist, lonely
CW - Devil like, Temptation for the workers, Lonely, Wishful etc.

Hope it helps.
A few thoughts on this exam from me:
On AIC Me birling hasn't come up, yet every other character has, neither has the themes question on the age gap.
Also, I have been looking at the foundation papers for these exams (I take higher) and there's a pattern that has been on going, for a few years. The pattern is that the foundation question from one year would come up as the higher question the next year, however that pattern broke last year but it may be worth having a look.....
They could also this year provide a passage or quote, they did that couple years back one time with stage directions and ending quote for Inspector Calls ..

I think they will ask a question on Mr Birling for inspector calls as they have not done that character yet looking through past papers!
I am definitely most worried for Inspector Calls, I am doing Of Mice and Men and relationships for poetry.

I'm just using the AQA website as a guide and the past paper questions my teachers given me.

Perhaps his detached and unemotional attitude and the ending of the book where he says 'Now what the hell ya suppose is eatin' them two guys?' after George has shot Lennie.
They could ask about isolation and how Carlson's behaviour is indicative of the stereotypical attitude in that time.

Yes that is actually quite a big possibility as Curley hasnt been mentioned in neither part a or b at all so far. Okay then of to revising some Curley quotes...
