Boys: Porn, Videos Games and the Masculinity Crisis.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/porn-and-video-game-addiction-are-leading-to-masculinity-crisis-says-stanford-prison-experiment-psychologist-10238211.html

According to an Independent article a leading psychologist has warned that young men are facing a crisis of masculinity due to excessive use of video games and pornography.

Psychologist and professor emeritus at Stanford University Phillip Zimbardo (yes THE Zimbardo) has made the warnings, which form a major part of his latest book, Man (Dis)Connected.

He said: "Our focus is on young men who play video games to excess, and do it in social isolation - they are alone in their room."

"Now, with freely available pornography, which is unique in history, they are combining playing video games, and as a break, watching on average, two hours of pornography a week."

---

The demise of guys is upon us. Guys are flaking out academically and they are wiping out sexually and socially with women. Boys are more likely to drop out from school. And girls out perform boys at every level now. Boys are 5 times more likely to have an attention deficit and make up the majority of special needs children. Zimbardo says that men have now a fear of intimacy manifesting itself as social awkwardness, failure to recognise social cues and interact with women. This is evidenced by research that tells us that young men are reporting an increase in shyness and a preference to avoid opposite sex interaction in favour of male-male bonding.

Thoughts? Has pornography and video games negatively impacted your life? Has it made you less of a man and more of an overgrown man-child?

http://yourbrainonporn.com/ Just thought this website would be of interest let me know what you think.
Less of a man? Define man first and i can answer.

Trust an extreme feminist to blame the failures of men in this society to the choices of men rather than the way that society as a whole views men and places unique and specific expectations and burdens on them that themselves are the cause of these negative phenomena rather than men just making bad decisions or being inferior...

Can you not see the parallel? Are you really that blinded with misandry?

Never watch porn hardly ever play video games, guess that makes me an alpha:cool:
It would help if you cited where this information came from.

What I can tell straight away though is that this 'masculinity crisis' is only supposedly affecting men who play video games and watch porn to excess meaning most hours of the day. That level of addiction would affect anyone's psychological health would it not?

As TorpidPhil said though, it's these gender stereotypes/expectations that are causing the real crises in mental health for men.

This kind of study just seems like a dig at men from a feminist perspective.

I'm not buying this, sorry. It's way too convenient for men to turn around and blame "society" on their failures when men have been and still are the ones shaping society so you're blaming yourself for your genders own shortcomings.

The parallel? There's no parallel because society (read: men) victim blame, slut shame, and oppress women yet women are still fighting the good fight while men appear to have thrown in the towel completely.

How much porn do you watch Phil? And are you a gamer?

Isn't that quite misandrist. I'm sure that can't be the case. Many woman also watch pornography and play video games albeit not as highly as men, but the principle still lies.

Just like with anything, you can't just lump all men in one corner and say that. I'm sure there are many who relate to various aspects of this, and many who don't.

There is also in recent years, an emergence of a lad culture, where many guys will try to sleep with as many woman as possible, in order to improve their 'score', then boast about it with their mates. I've even heard of a group of guys keeping a scoreboard in the flat their sharing. Which kind of contradicts the social awkwardness and interacting with woman part.

that is a worrying development. When I were a lad video gaming was the two hour a week break we took from porn.
No, the crisis of masculinity is because:
1. There aren't any jobs we can take pride in
2. We see no reason to work at all if it's not for a woman and kids

Porn has always been freely available, look at ancient Rome.

Your stance is victim blaming: you assume the crisis of masculinity is caused by men themselves; I guess because women have no agency, but men are supposed to man up and deal with whatever life throws at them without help?

You're only saying that because you are starting from a feminist and not an egalitarian position. It's just not true if you don't assume that there is a patriarchy. Because you do though and I don't, we're not going to get anywhere discussing this.

Comeon, don't do that... I'm not one of those immature kids trying to defend their favourite footballer despite everyone blatantly watching them suck. I'de admit to activities that I engage in being detrimental to me in some way if I thought they were but I don't. My personality has changed a lot over time whereas the amount of video games I play and porn I watch has not.
I mean I play games with friends online, that counts right?
Porn is the silent killer in todays society, studies have found it to cause ED, escalation of sexual tastes and serious addiction on a par with cocaine dependency.
