ADHD

I wondered what you (TSR) thought about the diagnosis that is ADHD.

It seems that the diagnosis/label is controversial even where children are concerned. How would you react if an adult told you they had a diagnosis of ADHD? What would you think?

I'm also i terested to hear if anyone has it, with or without hyperactivity......

I have a son age 11 who has adhd without the extreme hyperness among other things like autism and odd and so on and a younger son (undiagnosed) that's showing all the signs of adhd (hyper)
I don't have adhd myself and whether an adult if I knew them a while turned round n told me they had adult adhd I'd say to them 'good for u for finally getting answers and help' if they were a person I knew a while the new diagnosis isn't gonna make diff to me cos the adhd didn't just suddenly start happening n I wouldn't judge them any less for it. Of course if they started suddenly treating me different n unpleasant and using the new label of adhd to get away wit being a dick then I'd naturally be annoyed, as would anyone but otherwise if it's someone I knew a while then a new diagnosis isn't gonna change my view of them. They obviously always had adhd n it didn't just suddenly appear just cos it's diagnosed.

I have adhd. My meds control my hyperness though i mostly dont stop talking. You would think thats a good thing as i usually dont talk much due to my autism. The adhd meds supress my adhd but my autism comes out more then. I (and every1 else) cope better with my autism, for some reason every1 wants to strangle me when im hyper and i waste most of the lesson lol, i try not to forget to take my meds lol.

I sometimes suspect autism in myself too (so does my mum) and probably more so now since autism and adhd are so commonly experienced together. I think I just have traits of it though since my dad supposedly has Aspergers.

I knew i had it so i went to get checked out. Long story short, i was told i had ADHD and my mum and dad were WELL pissed off. Im on dexamphetamine mainly for my attention deficit and impulsiveness although im a bit hyperactive too. It took A LOT of courage to do so because i knew my mum and dad were gonna be so angry with me. Before i went to the GP i already told my parents beforehand that i thought i had ADHD. They didnt want anything to do with it and told me its all a lie, so i went behind my parents back and sought out the GP

From what i remember it took me around 4-6 months to get fully diagnosed.

The GP will do some tests and then refer you to a psychiatrist and he/she will do some more tests regularly. They will also send a questionnair to your school/workplace and parents (thats when they found out lol)

The symptoms for me are
- Forgetfullness (such as what was told to me a couple secs ago to few mins ago, keys, wallet, assignments)
- Very short attention span
- Very careless and stupid mistakes
- No sense of danger ( jumped from a big inflatable circus slide without thinking, broke my calf and ripped the tendon)
- Always fidgeting and cant sit still
- Get excited very easily which also leads to me being very hyper
- Very talkative
- Sometimes when i get angry I will throw a very bad tantrum
- Find it hard to finish things
- Sometimes it feels like im very excited and feel like doing things right away but i wont be bothered to continue it

Sorry your parents were not supportive, hope things are better now. I can understand it must have been hard for them as they dont want things to be wrong with thier kid. My mum is great but wants to strangle us 3 most days lol. I can see where she comes from as i defo could strangle 1 of my brothers everyday, torture then strangle lol. Keep getting your dosage checked and focuss on the subjects you enjoy most that way you can concentrate better.

Yea, i just guess that they didnt want me to have it. lol they were all up in my face making excuses of all sorts.
ha lolol i know what you mean about your mum! shes always tryna throw things at me idk why she gets pissed off at me adhd was not my choice, its kinda like she new i had it all along lol.

Yea i used to not take my pills cos of the side affects like a sh!tty sleep pattern and no appetite but now since exams are here i have to take em :P

I guess the only upside to having adhd is the DSA once you get to uni :P

What medicine are you on?

Im on concerta, my brother is on equism. Concerta made him real nasty and equism didnt calm me at all, weird. We takw melatonin to help us sleep, its great.

Yea, my brother has autism but my parents didnt want him on anything,

It seems like there is some sorta trait linking autism and ADHD.

And melatonin? were you prescribed it? the worse thing about taking dexamphetamine is the messed up sleeping patterns. Sometimes ill wake up at 3AM then at 5:30AM or at 2AM and wont be able to go back to sleep. Actually pisses me off lol

Im on concerta for adhd. It conteols it and helps me to concentrate. Melatonin is a god in our household lol, no1 would sleep without it. I told the doc i couldnt sleep due to concerta and asked for melatonin like my brothers. My dad has adhd, my mum divorced him and he cant be arsed to see us. My mum is being tested soon for autism as she has realised after us and understanding adhd and autism more that she has lots of traits too. Adhd, odd, ocd and autism are closley linked. Got to be careful as it might lead to anxiety, depression or bi polar. There is a lot of bi polar in my family. Im too layed back, girls are diffrent from boys, but my brother gets easily worked up and anxious so we keeping a close eye on him. Though my mums ocd is enough to put anyone on edge lol. My grampa has traits and his brother was defo autistic, not diagnosed, but had electric shock treatment when he was young.

What did he have that for? DId he have a mood disorder or is that what they did for autism in those days?

I'm having a beast of a time with it at the moment I cant even keep my mind on what im trying to type up on the computer. It was especially bad at my friends house last night, I was about to start climbing all over the chair. I still dont know what the conversation was about.

I have an assessment a week on Monday with a specialist consultant. I have to pay for it though.
