Failed my Chem5 mock a few weeks ago, absolutely dreading it! (Redox is fine though!) Since then, I've memorised the transition complex reactions and thermodynamic definitions, and I'm working on the period 3 equations - any other advice? Going back to the past papers tomorrow :smile:

I'm feeling alright. Just need to remember all the stupid ****ing colours and complex ion reactions but the concepts are fine.

I think there are less odd questions possible on CHEM5 than CHEM4 at least, nothing like that cyclodiene bond enthalpy question.

I'm self studying and that's basically how I learnt the whole thing to begin with.

Hey everyone, so i have a chemistry tutor who has been teaching chem for a veeeery long time & her advice for unit 5 is to c come up with a list of things from the spec that didn't come up in the unit 4 exam: the theory is that because unit 5 is synoptic they might try to sneak in some things that weren't in unit 4.
So far i remember that chromatography didn't come up & neither did infrared spectroscopy. Hopefully if people can reply with what they remember we might be able to collectively make some predictions!
Also I know i haven't been using these threads very long but if you're here just to bore on about how "easy" you thought unit 4 was, jog on mate, soz :biggrin:

there's always a nasty (or nice, depending how good a chemist you are) question on transition metal titrations at the end; you usually have to construct an equation and the use the mole ratio to work something out. there's a couple of those that are tricky so make sure you go over those!!

well since CHEM4 was disgusting and had things out of the spec, they could ask us on a random transition metal that we haven't learnt about ;-) lol. no ideas tho wby?
