Wasn't sure if 1:0.45
Or 2.2:1.

Did latter

I got 118:53 as well... I had a heart attack seeing everyone else put 2.2:1

I would have said that except it said calculate

I did B- I wrote about Meiosis, Mitosis, Cancer (/control/ of growth) and specialisation (development) - Plants converting sunlight energy to useable energy, Trophic levels, and Succession.

I definitely feel like the first half of my essay was stronger than the second half but in the heat of the moment my mind went blank for essay 1.
can someone share their answers rather than this 2 mark ratio and essay that nobody can agree on
I wasn't entirely sure for the first question, I know I got the first one wrong because I put anisotropic band but I think it was actin, then the second I put ATPase, then the third I put troponin instead of tropomyosin but it should be tropomyosin right? Oh dear

What he hell is the z line connected to?! Apart from that I think it was ok! 😀

Actin I think

There's always a lot of alows so I think everything would be correct .

did anyone else find that crap of just me

I did 10a).. spoke about

-Stimulus.. (I described reflex arc but I forgot to state reflexes? would I be penalised? I just said organisms respond to stimuli? ahh im a idiot)
Gave an example when humans touch something hot..

-Kensis and taxes of organisms,
kenesis responses to external temp
Taxes response to sunlight

(I forgot to talk about tropism, even though I wrote it in my plan)

-Ectotherms, endotherms.. how mammals increase heat when body temp is low (e.g. shivering)

-Homeostasis bull ****.. I waffelled about blood PH level... If high conc in C02, more CO2 breathed in so decreases blood PH, causes enzymes denature... counteracts by increase in respiration

-Natural selection and speciation.. (This is probably wrong, but I just said that this must take place for a species to adapt and survive to changes in the external environment? described speciation LOL)
Being cheeky here.. I probably didn't get marks for this point... but hey.. One tends to BS alot in exams....

How many marks do you think I'll get? I may flopped a little...what did you guys write?
(edited 8 years ago)
From June 2011 MS where you were also asked to "calculate a ratio".
118:53, 2.2:1 and 1:0.44 will all be fine, and also the graph reading was slightly subjective so anything similar to any of those will get both marks. Just for reassurance!

I did B! Topics I did where:

Tumour supressor genes + proto-onco genes
Oestrogen and transcriptional factors
Control of Oestrus cycle (feedback loops)
Speciation + selection

Anyone else do B?

I did b as well, I wrote about Oestrous cycle, meiosis and intensive farming/selective breeding

We will get both - I just checked an MS from June 2011

I wrote about reflex arcs and the importance (avoiding harmful stimuli), thermoregulation and importance of that for enzymes, blood pH maintenance via gaseous exchange and importance of that for enzymes, immune response and importance of that in not getting ill (an invading pathogen is a change in the internal environment) and I wrote a little bit on glucoregulation then ran out of time

i did B!
i liked the first one but i couldnt think of any AS only A2 so i did B:
mitosis, meiosis, vaccines , cancer, trophic levels and food chain
everyone's found it easy and I found it bad 😫😥

Can you get scientific content marks for your plan? Every essay I've done I just lost marks for not enough breadth of content. In my plan I included homeostasis (CO2/temp/blood pressure), endotherms and ectotherms, nervous system (stimuli and response, reflexes, Pacinian corpuscles) plant response (transpiration - closing the stomata, geo and phototropisms) insect response (taxis and kinesis), evolution and adaptation, and antibiotic resistance. But I ended up going on for ages about negative feedback and homeostatic systems even though I knew it was completely irrelevant, I just felt like it wouldn't be complete without an explanation.

In the end all I managed to talk about was a huge amount on why temperature and BP need to be controlled (enzyme denaturation, optimal temp, high BP can cause an aneurysm, low BP can cause tissue death and can be fatal etc), natural selection in response to intraspecific competition for resources and adaptation to the conditions of the environment, and migration to areas with more favourable conditions. I mentioned that different species are adapted for different conditions, specifically thermophiles, and that whales have been migrating in response to climate change (although I didn't get that paragraph finished). I'm hoping this is enough for the marks for beyond A level content, but I don't know. I spent nearly an hour on that essay and didn't get as much done as I'd have liked :frown:

Also wondering if you can lose marks for irrelevant content (as opposed to just not getting any).

Overall I think it was an alright paper, but I missed quite a few questions. They weren't particularly hard, I just couldn't remember a lot of stuff so I missed most of the muscles question, I missed the oestrous cycle stuff (although I don't think there was much on that? Only remember a question about LH?) and didn't do the ratio question because I didn't know which number to divide by which. Also missed the tumour surpressor one and possibly more on the DNA stuff? Can't remember all the questions. Ugh.

Hope the boundaries are low.
For the responses to changes to internal/external, i wrote:

- Antigens and how the body responds
- Heamoglobin
- Predator/Prey relationships
- Control of heart rate
- Control of temperature

Wanted to write nerve impulses but ran out of time, just about finished the control of temperature. Is that enough?

What did people put for the myosin molecule mutation? and what about the monoclonal antibodies?
