look people pass the first year at palacky, some don't - it is made to be a filter year, but dont think its about how hard you work - its about who you know and how lucky you get

Thankyou for this, I think ill just apply in england :P
I've been accepted to study dentistry here! Who's in the same boat then?
Hi, how do you mean - who you know and how lucky you get?
Are the exams all oral exams ?
Are the lecturers helpful or ignorant?
After the first year drop out - ow many more leave after year 2 or 3?

Grateful for your reply.
Thanks

It all depends on the mentality you're coming with. The first year is a filter year indeed but if you study really hard and give it your best you will not fail.
Its a damn good uni and the lecturers are really helpful. You can interrupt in lectures and ask questions and you can even go to them during the week for questions. Again, it all depends on how much you study and how focused you are.
People that studied a lot have been kicked out and this wasn't fair so this is what upset mostly everyone here.

Oh, thanks for letting me know btw. I'm currently choosing between palacky and plovdiv in bulgaria and heard bulgaria is reallyyyy disorganised. I really want to study medicine and my only option is to go abroad. And it's quite hard to get info on the universities

Heyyy I'm currently studying at Palacky about to go into 2nd yr and I've been there and done that and could probably publish a book on the whole process

I would advice you against going for Bulgaria-I'm not sure about the disorganisation but I'd be worried about the quality of teaching.

In my case, I applied to Palacky as my security option and then to 3 Italian unis via the IMAT. I would deffo recommend taking the IMAT cuz u really dont have much to lose (except money I guess) and their courses and unis are well established and living in italy would be amazing.... the exam is kinda hard though and for me last year there were only 155 places and so the top 155 ppl get in (although it's a biiit more complicated as its dependant on your choice of unis)

Anyway, bottom line, I ended up in Palacky. And I would definitely agree with what you said about hard work. I mean yes, it's about who you know too but only up to a certain extent, eventually everyone gets up to speed in terms of resources (as with any endeavour we choose in life) buut I have never worked this hard in my life before. It takes a lot of commitment and memorising a LOT of stuff. The course is muuucchh tougher than UK unis so prepare for that.

People will say a lot but I think u got the right idea so far, lemme know if you have any qs I'd be happy to answer them

Thanks for your advice. I have just started my research on studying medicine abroad in Europe & US. I am from UK.
I was wondering if after studying in Palacky for 6 years you can do further specialisation (for GP or consultant in UK). If yes is it difficult/competitive again to do specialisation here. Is this univ recognised in UK & US. Is it a good univ. Does one have option for doing specialisation there if you don't get in UK? Do we have to take an exam in UK or US after this 6 years course???

What are the entry requirements to get in Palacky? What is the name of the entrance exam etc? What does it consist of and how to prepare for it? Is it competitive to get in

What is the finances per year fees and living expenses for people from UK?

Thanks I was also wondering is there an option to study Medicine in US for people from UK. I believe you guys had done some research about US universities. Is it true that it is not advisable to study in US as you need to do graduation before applying for Medicine and hence end up taking more years.......

You guys were talking about Medicine in Italy? How do you prepare for IMAT exam. If you could tell me more about it.

As I said I have just started my research, I would appreciate all the information and help

Many thanks in advance

Hi Fizzax
Just submitted my application to study medicine at Palacky University and the entrance exams is scheduled for 22/8/15.
What is life like out there? Really worried how I would cope with leaving home for a far away country and settling to what seem like the most difficult career on earth.
What do I expect at the entrance exams?
What is the university accomodation like?
What is the approximate living costs and essentials without the tuition.
Is learning the local language compulsory?
What is the UK students population like?

Aniess

Please can we spaek at some point?

Heyhey Aniess
Entrance exam:
so you'll be given 3 papers, maths or physics, biology and chemistry. In each you'll have to get 50/60% (lol I was doing this last year, I can't even remember lol) to pass. Maths, it is out of 5, I picked maths and from my point of view I found that paper hard, had some complicated maths like finding x in equations, angles, sequences etc- I did A2 maths, but that paper those questions were sooo weird lol! Just try your hardest!!. biology and chemistry are AS and A2 knowledge, so read through your books, you'll be fine on those . Your agency should give you sample papers and topics you learn before coming to the exam, if not then ring your agency for them . Good luck, I'm sure you'll do fine !

I'm also from the UK, honestly before coming I was very much a mothers girl, my mum used to do everything for me lool it was hard to leave my family but when you get into that student environment you'll be more focused on your studies, I'm not trying to scare you but 1st year is really hard at Palacky compared to any UK medical unis, I had to do around 7-8 finals but if you're focused, organised and really want to do this then yeah dw it'll be all fine , I'm going into my 2nd year!!
I try to make space to Skype my parents everyday to let them know I'm still alive 😂
First few months will be difficult to settle in, you will get lost when you go to different places (that's how we all learn) but after it'll be like an everyday routine. I've gained very much independence, trust, confidence and organisation from all this!

Like everyone here at Palacky are really nice, even the teachers, we're all willing to help  I've made really great friends here, we do everything together, we motivate each other A LOT (there's times you'll give up because it's soo tough but having friends that will help you up, it's great)
My parents roughly pay £500 a month, break down:
-accommodation roughly £100 - in 1st year you'll be sharing a room with another person (of course same gender lool). Rooms are new, big, have plenty of space to put all your stuff. You'll be sharing a kitchen and toilet (x2) with other people in the same dorm as you. -My phone bill
-shopping for food etc

Palacky is found in Olomouc, it's a small town, 30/45mins car ride from Brno airport. It's mostly a student base town, you'll see a greater ratio of Czech and international students compared to older generation lol. Yeaah czech language is needed, I think we do czech language for 3 years. In my 1st year timetable czech for medics is 2x a week. We have a written and oral exam in the summer exams, be ready for that lol.
If you have any other questions, don't worry just message me, I'll try to answer all your questions honestly

Thanks for your some answers that you gave above. Some were common to mine. If you could please answer mine I would appreciate that.

Would you recommend this univ? Do you repent your decision ever?Do you ever think that you should have taken gap year so something but studied in UK?

Heyaa Nomita:smile:
I'll try to answer your question that I know!
I know everyone's worried about what's going to happen after 6 years, that's like ageees away, time can change. Firstly your main priority is to get into 1st year and pass that, then when you get closer to the end of the degree start to worry then! I haven't really thought about "specialisation" just yet medicine is really broad but I'm pretty sure you can. After graduation, many people come to the UK and apply to do fy1 then fy2 then you can specialise to what you want (I'm not 100% sure about that tho) lol.
You don't have to do an extra exam when you come to the uk, it's GMC recognised. But for applying to America you have to do the USMLE, that's all I know so far tbh.
Yeah/ no - people only leave if they are not focused, not really care about medicine or just there for the lols, etc those people fail the year! Exams are tough, specially chemistry, just work hard that's all I can say tbh, not mess about! Yeah I'm not going to lie, I need much more time to revise compare to other people in my year, so I stopped going out and sat down and studied my arse out lol. To study for exams is mostly lectures, you can print them out and analyse them etc . Chemistry will be mostly AS and A2 stuff, same as biology. For anatomy is certain text books that most people use:smile:
Your parents are using their own money to send you there just think about that, make them proud .

I really loved my choice, I don't regret it at all, best decision I think  well, we all have different opinions. why don't you go for one day and look around Palacky! But if you have the grades, experience what's so ever to apply for next year, then 100% take a gap year and then reapply to UK uni, you'll be dumb (no offence) if you didn't!

Hope that all helped:smile:, sorry I can't really answer your other question, I don't know myself!

I meant to say that I struggle with domestic stuff (organising my stuff and cleaning up). Wondering how I would cope out there without my mom.

Opps mybad, sorry... Lool I think you'll have to adapt, that's part of growing up and being independent. There's a laundry place near by, 2mins walk from where we live, they charge around £8 (250kc) for wash, dry and fold. Also my mum packs like loads of food in those food containers, I take around 20kg worth of food back to Olomouc, I brought myself a freezer ( which you're not suppose to but the dorm manager she's really nice, I think she doesn't care lol), I freeze my food there, it usually last me for a while. Pretty much half your worries are already solved😂

Hi Fizzax,

I just got my alevel results and missed my offer by quite a lot :/ I am now looking to study at palacky but chemistry has never been my strong point, do you think I would struggle heavily in the first year??
Also, I only just started looking into this and have seen theres an entrance exam next saturday? Do you think a week of revising 10 hours a day + would get me up to the level? having had a look at the practice tests the maths is especially hard but so is the biology as it has topics that weren't covered in my AS/A2 course?

thank you xx
I'm thinking of applying to medicine in Bulgaria not too sure which university yet. I have several questions:

How difficult is the first year in comparison to A Levels?
How do the exams work?
What is the quality of teaching like?
How many people get kicked out?
Do you need to learn the local language?
