Korean War II?

Tensions are once again rising at the Korean peninsula with North Korea threatening 'strong military action' if its southern counterparts do not stop loudspeaker broadcasts along the border at the demilitarized zone. Could this be the early signs of a real conflict between the two Koreas?

Doubtful. The Kim regime is obsessed with survival. It knows that at best in the event of a war it could cripple the south, followed quickly by its own utter destruction. It is unlikely the North would ever attack the South. Still the regime could end up quickly losing control of events.

Strictly speaking, it would be the first Korean war (still), rather than a Korean war II. The first one hasn't ended, it's just an armistice.

Unlikely. North Koreans leaderships main aim is to stay in power and in a shooting war with South Korea and the U.S. North Korea would very quickly take the short step backwards to the Stone Age.

You said it yourself in the very first sentence of this thread: once again.

This happens all the time. There are shellings, ships are sunk, people die...and yet they don't go back to war. There are many more things stopping them from fighting than there are making them fight. Nobody wants war there.

They want sabre rattling and the constant threat of war, for propaganda purposes. But they don't want an all out actual war because they know they would lose.

Strengthen dear leaders position as a hard man in the north.

Increased food or financial support from. South Korea/ US.

North Korea needs to be seen as a naughty toddler that needs to be pacified and not be told off.
