I got 4A*1A for A levels AMA

Not here to brag but I some how managed to get 4A*s 1A in triple sciences and double maths and was hoping I could answer questions anyone may have on A levels or sciences or maths or just general chat :biggrin: Feel free to ask about anything!

Never bothered applying to OxBridge as Im an international student applying for medicine, plus my AS UMS was definitely not high enough.

My A was in Chemistry which I was expecting an A* instead of Physics. To be honest I am crap in Physics and one of the teachers wasn't good at teaching it.
So where have you applied then ?
I applied to UCL Imperial Barts St.Georges and Birmingham, and firmed St.Georges :biggrin:

Im from hong kong but i've been in uk since i started GCSEs which wasnt all that good :s-smilie:

How do you limit distractions?
How do you stay motivated?

Oh hell yeah, even from a young age kids have to work for hours after school. Its such a shame really, alot of kids are raised to dislike education. I left for an international school so things were pretty chill from there haha

To be honest I didn't study that much, alot of it was down to technique for me. Aside from 2 hours of prep time (I board at school) I do around 1 or 2 hours of just reading around the syllabus, not necessarily just teacher notes or textbooks.

During GCSEs I tried to lock away my laptop on weekdays but that didn't turn out to be all that useful for me but who knows, maybe it'll work for you. I kinda just made sure I did all that I want to do on weekends. Work hard, play hard :biggrin:

Staying motivated was easy when you want to do better than your mates and not look bad, and of course medicine was the biggest motivator!

Well, good for you.. A bit early, I know, but do you know what you want to specialise in?

I haven't decided yet haha. I know I wouldnt like pediatrics, not cos of kids, but cos theres alot of pushy parents :s-smilie: And I would think twice before going for any surgical area as technology has and will replace the need of some surgical specialities... wouldn't want to waste years of training and become obsolete :smile:

Can you give any tips on how to have a sucess like yours?Hw often do you study and do you devote all your time to studying and how can you focus and concentrate on your studies? I find it very hard to concentrate and I often say to myself I will study when I go home but I usually don't do it as often as I should, As well as what will you study in university? And do you enjoy Physics and chemistry and should you pick what you enjoy for A levels or pick a subject that you dislike and are not so good at but the subject would give you lots of potential in the future for example maths is very useful but if you don't enjoy it should you choose it for gcse.My final question is can you focus and suceed on your own or do you think your parents need to push you?

For maths and further maths I would say find out what you're bad at, ie which module you're the weakest and then focus on past papers. I realised I was kinda weak at M3 around the beginning of exams so I just sat there and did all the M3 papers in a couple of days. But obviously when you get stuck you'll want to seek help from someone...

Physics and chemistry was pretty much just learning the stuff and then kinda memorising generic mark scheme for different types of questions using the exam material provided by the exam board. Hope this kinda helps
