Better battery life at the cost of running Slow and run hot

Newer M core laptops won't run slow or overheat easily. Especially light ultra-books which lose heat easily

Oh really? I always liked the idea of the m processors for power efficiency, but as i highlighted the issues, I haven't really kept up to date with this line of processors. Im more of a desktop fan myself

Nothing wrong with an intel core m processor, it's slower than a y processor but say if you got an Asus zenbook ux305 with 128gb ssd and 8gb ram that's more than enough power for web browsing and photo editing..... Trust me this laptop won't be overclocked unless you're doing some serious multi tasking or heavy gaming. The speed of ssd is amazing.

If you don't want to spend around £600 for a laptop maybe you should look at some chrombooks and save yourself some money. Have a look at the lenova range as well.

If you're techy which I assume you're not because otherwise you wouldn't be making this thread you could always have a go at making your own laptop and pc specialist for a cheap price.

I would definitely recommend the Asus for your needs.

I would always suggest going y processor in most cases but the Asus really has done something special with an M core chip, it's incredibly light, 8 hours battery and still runs and boots up super quick. If you're running it hard for a long time it will heat up fast due to it's fanless design but for OP's needs it will be ok. Haha I don't really need anything as powerful as a desktop because I only use my laptop for arbitrary needs

Need a new laptop, as my current 5 year old one is beginning to let me down. My budget is around 500 pounds, and I'm willing to overstep that a bit.

So basically in terms of usage, I would be using it for intensive web browsing, some photo editing every now and then, as well as university work.

I am looking for something which is fairly light and compact to carry around in my bag all the time, and which has the right specs to keep up with my needs.

So is there anything anyone suggests, because I've been looking for weeks now.

The only one that I really like is the ASUS UX305, despite it's keyboard, and terrible speakers. The only major issue I have with it, is it's Intel Core M processor

I've heard that chromebooks are useless as they are heavily broswer based. Tbh, I've not really looked into them, and don't know much about them

Regarding the Lenovo range, is there any specific one you would suggest?

Have you had any personal experience with this laptop, in terms of usage? You seem to be sure about the Core-M processor, everyone else seems to be really against the Core-M processor. Saying that, the reviews seem to be backing up your statements about it being perfectly fine.

Have you taken a look at dell xps 13 or Lenovo ideapad range. Those are pretty powerful and can be bought in same price range as the zenbook

I haven't really looked into Chromebooks either tbh I just know their cheap and pretty fast, I guess if you're into photo editing you might not want to go that way.

Mhmm I've heard good things about the lenova yoga 3 but I'm not sure about the price. Do you want a touch screen laptop or not? EDIT: Just looked at the lenova yoga 3 pro and it's out of your price range and is actually slower than the Asus so probably avoid that.

No personal experience but I've done the research surrounding the laptop, yeah it's because most laptops using M processors are old and slow due to most new laptops running Y processors. However if you look at geekbench stats you can clearly see the Zenbook actually outperforms a lot of laptops running y processors. Don't worry too much about the processor just focus on the laptop itself

Right now I'm deciding between a dell xps 13 or an Asus Zenbook. Realistically for your price range you won't get a cheaper ultrabook, in my opinion either get the Asus or look around for a slightly heavier laptop with more power and a bigger screen, maybe look at the MSI range of laptops or there are plenty of deals atm on the Microsoft store for students. There are a lot of good laptops on there, most around your budget will be a corei 5 with 4gb ram and 128gb ssd which should be powerful enough for your needs.
