Why is the UK scared of socialism?

And the west in general, really...

Scroll to see replies

Because it is alien to us...it is something we know nothing about and the UK media is biased towards a right-wing agenda which favours anything but socialism and the mainstream parties at Westminster all advocate maximising corporate profits and populism and much more.............
Why the hell would a successful country want socialism?
I don't know the historic track record of socialism has been great just look at Russia, China, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, North Korea, Yugoslavia, Romania, Poland, Hungary... oh

Yes give your generic they weren't really socialist replies.

Because capitalism itself is fine - it's just greed that ruins the system, which will always be present in both capitalism + socialism regardless.

Also what the above poster said about the fantastic track record of socialism.
Because most people are too stupid to read the Daily Star, and instead read vicious right wing rags like the Independent, the Daily Mirror and the Sunday Star. Hence, they think that socialism has a history of increasing govenment size, decreasing liberty, hindering the creation of wealth and failure in general.

Capitalism will soon have killed 2 billion people whilst socialism and communism remain untried and the paths to a brave new world.

That's true about capitalism...it's in favour of most rich people who thrive off profit. Unfortunately most of the people that do are heavily skewed towards this system (big business owners) have no regard for their workers, environment etc.

Communism does remove a few liberties though, such as the freedom to open a business. What if you aspired to create a business of your choice? In a communist state you would be unable to do so due to the govt owning all the businesses as well as the industries. Socialism also advocates for this (you could say it was a branch of communism :dontknow:).

Another thing is that people who put in the hard work to become, let say, a doctor or an engineer will end up being paid the same as someone who works at checkout. If you think about, what would be the point of getting a degree and working so hard when you'll ultimately get the same reward as someone who (possibly) didn't try as much?

Although this could be a good thing. People with barriers (language, disabilities etc) have an equal chance in a communist state. Such as a labourer who never received an education due to financial issues. He/she would then still get the same as someone who did have an education.

It's a complicated thing. There are pros and cons.

Socialism is a wrecking ball just like atheism and feminism.

To be fair, there is a fairly high element of socialism in the UK already, and I'm quite glad it exists, it's the combination of that and capitalism which makes us, in my opinion, a much nicer place to live than in for example, the USA which is incredibly capitalistic. Socialism isn't to be mistaken for Communism - there is no communism in the UK and that is a system which has been proven in history to have worse results for a society as a whole than capitalism has.
Capitalism is the unequal distribution of wealth.
Socialism is the equal distribution of misery.

India tried socialism for about 40 years from independence until 1991. It brought that nation to its knees and they had to request an IMF bailout.

Since then, India has started some form of economic liberalisation and hasn't looked back.

Even despite the rampant poverty, the majority of Indians don't want to go back to socialist India.

The message: even a country like India which endured unfettered socialism for 40 years doesn't want it - why don't we learn from them?
**** socialism... I will leave the UK if it ever became a socialist country

You don't have to destroy Capitalism in order for a Socialist solution to work. Examples of Socialism are wealth distribution via the NHS, Education and Welfare system which we have in this country.

Jeremy Corbyn is well aware of this. He understands that a Socialist society will never work in a world that is Capitalist in its very nature. This is why he wants to utilize the Capitalist means of money manipulation (QE) to bring Britain into the 21st century.

You may doubt me but look at China. The place use to be a third world country but Mao that Communist murdering lunatic used the Capitalists greed and spending power to his own advantage. The benefit we have with Corbyn is that hes not going to go mad-max and slaughter a load of civilians to get what he wants. At best he might break the law and cease some assets of the 1% but that is hardly threatening to run over a Civilian with a Tank lol.

And at worst? You speak of seizing the assets of the so-called one percent as if it's an acceptable thing to do so long as comrade Corbyn gets into power.

What was the most commonly used murder weapon? It's high time people like you realised that there is no moral equivalence between murder and people dying under a given economic system.

Also nice to see you bring out the tired old no true Scotsman fallacy. Bravo, with you as our leader we shall surely reach this brave new world very soon indeed.
