Why are we giving social housing to immigrants from Poland, Bulgaria, Croatia etc?

Why the **** would any person in the UK want their country made poorer to make Eastern Europe wealthier?

name one other reason other than the fact immigrants can come here and legitimately get housing, you feel the EU doesn't benefit us. I bet you wouldn't be so upset if it was someone from German, Netherlands or Sweden?

Isn't it a bit silly to admit immigrants who can't even afford their own accommodation?

Well yes, we shouldn't really give them out to foreigners, but you have to realise 99% of folks sleeping rough are heavy drug users and are not fit for council housing/have been kicked out of their council housing.

Eastern European Ex-soldiers who fought for Britain during world war II, for example.

Think about it this way. Eastern Europe gets richer --> more people come back to their home countries --> less immigrants in UK --> isn't that what you want?

I only want less low-skilled immigrants and there's a much easier solution- leave the EU and stop admitting low-skilled immigrants! It doesn't require us giving money away!

Also, UK is so rich, it can't be "made poorer" just like that. That's not how the economy works mate. Also, Eastern Europe isn't as poor as you think and doesn't take as much money as you might imagine, else Britain would be out of EU ages ago.

I know how economies work..... I studied economics! The EU has nothing to do with economics and has everything to do with socialist liberals "punishing" the UK, forcing them to redistribute wealth and increase "diversity".

The EU has passed ~55 laws which the UK voted against. If we voted against them and still ended up with them, that doesnt benefit us!

If they were low-skilled I would be just as "upset".

You're not doing a very good job of saying why the EU is bad

If the EU is all about socialist liberals how come it is mostly backed by the Centre-Right parties?

Also I'm curious what economic theory do you agree with most?

However the EU is far from democratic.
There's a lot of anti-EU going on here and I am not surprised. I just find the generalisations sometimes incredibly ignorant and misplaced.

I'm from the Netherlands and I have been in the UK since 2004. I'm a taxpayer. My family also owns a recruitment agency and we employ about 70 people. We are not on any benefits whatsoever. We created a service used by hundreds of people and gave employment to many people.

Fair enough if you want more controlled immigration. This is somewhat understandable...However leaving the EU will be far more costly than it seems at a glance - suddenly, Britain will have to re-establish all trading links on its own. It'll become a very isolated place again - at least in terms of international trade and politics. This has its own benefits and drawbacks, but no doubt will be very costly money-wise, and effort-wise, for some amount of time. Also, those 1.3 million British immigrants or so who live in the EU will have to return at some point. This will obviously amount to something...

Also, as chantalc had rightly said, not all Eastern Europeans are low-skilled strawberry pickers or cleaners; many I know are doctors, work in healthcare industry or are important managers/bosses at companies, offices, factories etc. They're people just like everyone else. Would you say that all Asians/Indians/Africans etc. are all low skilled? Exactly.

Moreover, just because Britain might leave EU doesn't mean that all imaginary problems to do with immigration hyped up by DailyMail and UKIP will be automatically solved...Leaving the EU isn't exactly like waving a magical wand to get rid of everyone's problems...

How is a Dutch entrepreneur related to giving social housing to low-skilled immigrants?

You just asked what other EU things have screwed over the UK, I tell you and you reply back with "thats how democracy works".......... I appreciate you're 16, so congrats, but your argument is just so inconsistent.

Enforce the non-EU immigration policy. I care not about nationality, but level of skill, sustainability and culture.

You're first paragraph relies on the asumption that our trade with europe would be badly damaged, this is unlikely.

She may be 16 but her arguments are more coherent and sensible than all the ones I've seen off you.

But have you seen what a lot of those laws are? I sigh with relief every time the EU intervenes.

Two for example were fishing quota and the neonics moratorium. Thank the lord for the EU.

It's a bit disturbing that posters here actually have an issue with the immigrants rather than the policies. My point being, if you don't like it, change the policy but there is no need to be hostile towards the immigrant. Demand and supply, kids.

I don't think I've ever agreed with you before, and I certainly wouldn't have put it that way, but yes, many homeless people have had a chance at council housing and rejected it or suffered from drug/alcohol problems which prevents them being housed in council housing. On top of that most homeless people are single men,, nearly all people given council homes are families or vulnerable women these days due to the severe shortage.

Well durr.

Even if none of them were here we still wouldn't have enough social housing though.

They just make the problem much worse.

I've worked in the social housing sector so I know a little bit about this issue. A very high proportion (can't remember the figure but it's staggeringly high) of homeless people suffer from mental illness. Their behaviour/drug dependency often stems from this mental illness.

We don't have a proper care system in this country so we dump most of the mentally ill in housing estates, give them a poorly-equipped housing officer who usually has no idea what they're doing and just leave them there. Then we're surprised when we have this situation. It's awful

But yeah most of the rest are, as you say, young guys as they barely get any help at all so I suppose in that regard Billy has a point when we says we're clearly short of places in social housing (have you seen the waiting lists for single men?) so needlessly increasing the strain on the system with countless people from elsewhere who don't contribute is very questionable

Still, the homelessness versus social housing issue is more complicated than many in this thread have let on
