I guess the pay compensates for days and days of calculator bashing...

Haha, definitely.

I wish my teachers had said "Look, you need to concentrate in maths because then you'll earn the highest salaries around".

Or you could just build some kind of online community that becomes the go-to destination for students and aspiring students...

... is too high...
It has a huge upward swing compared with other professions.
Training advice: if you want to be an actuary, this is the kind of question you should be able to answer for yourself :awesome:

Sadly it's not something you can just decide to pick up. It has grown increasingly competitive, need 340 UCAS points or above. I got a first in mathematics and most of the big firms wouldn't even consider me (got ABC), and also you need to demonstrate an interest in Finance (yawn) as well as being a team player, head of hockey team etc etc in other words they want superwoman/man. Plus they work you like a dog during qualification (roughly4 yrs), go for it if you can but know there will be vv hard work ahead. Ps a degree with a placement in puts you ahead good luck🍀

Your First in Maths didn't outweigh ABC at A-Level? What was your Maths grade if you don't mind me asking?

NO! That was the annoying thing. Out of the famous top 4 Only PwC were prepared to look at me. Got A in Maths at A level, the C was in Spanish. I didn't take it personally tho as they really use the UCAS as a way of weeding out candidates. Not necessarily the best way to do it, but efficient in cutting down the numbers. Also I was weak in IT skills so would have had to do an excel course in the summer. In the end I went to do an MSc in statistics, all the computer stuff is part of the course. I guess it would be in Financial Maths courses also

I expect others will follow the PwC (and more recently, EY) example

That's great news, jneill. I might try again, though I think I might still struggle at interview stage compared to those with a true interest in finance if I am honest. If only it were so simple that you just choose your career based on prospective salary! I have been very put off by the level of competitiveness and at the moment my MSc workload is killing me. I think most firms have application dates around April?!
