The Student Room Group

£80000 was randomly put into my bank account yesterday.

When I checked my account this morning there was £80000 extra in my account. Obviously that is a lot of money.

What should I do? I think I will just keep my mouth shut.

What would happen if the bank found out I had it and didn't say anything?

Do nothing - but don't spend it.
In all liklihood they'll realise it was a mistake eventually.

Weren't you the same user that apparently had 80000 girlfriends?:curious:

On you Flan20 account?

Now you have £80000 in the bank by accident.

Right and all that makes perfect sense.

Maybe it's a pound from every one of his girlfriends?
If you spend it and they ask for it back, there's a good chance you'll then be £80k in debt. You don't have to say anything I don't think, but I'd wait a while because if they transfer it back you're in trouble if you spent it.

Ring the bank straight away and tell them about the error
You can thank me later
If that was me, I would transfer the money to another account immediately, leave the country, change my appearance and never come back

Could I not spend it and say I didn't know it wasn't mine?

They'll notice and ask for it back eventually. I think the interest is yours though when they do. Not sure.

I've already told you my advice, your choice if you choose to follow or not....
Yep. You must ring your bank immediately. Honesty is the best policy. Sure it's a lot of money, but if it's not yours in the first place, you won't miss it.
