Could I not just say I didn't realize it was there?

Yes it is still there.

Screw it I have decided I am not telling the bank. It was put in my account so its my money now.

Lol if this is true...

Its not your money because they will notice its in your account soon and then take it back. Its only yours if you transfer it to another account.. preferably in another country lmao

I've already told you my advice, your choice if you choose to follow or not....

Yeah no way am I following you advice. I have decided to keep the money and get rich.
Blatantly a troll.

But hypothetically go ahead and spend it if you like; there's countless similar stories so you'll be forced to return it anyway and even charged with theft. Makes no difference, you never get to keep it. Your heart is stupid.

Yep. You must ring your bank immediately. Honesty is the best policy. Sure it's a lot of money, but if it's not yours in the first place, you won't miss it.

Honestly gets you no where in live.
Quite. I believe 24A relates to dishonestly retaining wrongful credit. I can't believe this thread is genuine anyway, but just for the sake of discussion, it's a similar situation to being overpaid by your employer. If they inadvertently stick an extra £100 in your pay packet, you could probably successfully argue that you didn't notice, but no one will believe that you didn't notice an extra £80k in your account (unless you have a 7 figure or higher bank balance).

If that was me, I would transfer the money to another account immediately, leave the country, change my appearance and never come back

It's £80k not 8million ffs

Right so you saying to open an account in another country and transfer the money to there?

If the bank investigate won't they see that I have taken that money and put it into that account and they will come after me. :frown:

Suppose it would need to be a country that would protect me from the uk authorities if they came looking for me.

Look, if what you're saying is you don't know what to do with it, I'm sure some of us would appreciate you sending a share our way :wink:

Why is it every thread on tsr there is always some nutjob that shouts troll.

I am being serious. How could they charge me with theft? I was giving that money. If somebody came up to you in the street and gave you money and you spent that would you be done for theft? no- so whats the difference here?

Sell everything. Buy a one way ticket to Monte Carlo. Live your life.

but its innocent until proven guilty.

They have no reasonable evidence that I did know of the money.

I've read an article about a similar situation - the legal position IIRC is that if you spend it, it is technically theft and at the very least it will have to be repaid.

Enjoy your jail sentence then. For you to get an additional £80k means someone else is down £80k. As soon as the bank connects the dots, the police and CPS would be involved and you'd be in trouble.

If honesty gets you know nowhere in life, at least it won't get you in prison.

I could just say I didn't notice the extra 0 at the end. I had about just over £8000 originally anyway.

£80k is a lot more money in other countries....

I could just take the 80000 and go to the casino and put it all on red. If it comes up I could let the bank know about their mistake and give the orignal 80000 back. If not just keep my mouth shut and act stupid if the bank ever come calling.

You're being accused of being a troll because you've laid out a scenario that's highly implausible.

I think I can make a good argument to avoid jail if it ever comes to a trial.

When I checked my account this morning there was £80000 extra in my account. Obviously that is a lot of money.

What should I do? I think I will just keep my mouth shut.

What would happen if the bank found out I had it and didn't say anything?

Lend me some, please?
