Why do people drink alcohol?

Drinking is mostly regular amongst students, even then it's not everyday.People that work only drink when they are socialising and they do not get drunk and start shouting or being rude.

Nah you're wrong. Its not about shouting or being rude its about the high calories in alcohol and bad side effects...Get in the gym take up sport you'll feel far more invigorated and meet more positive people.

Students drink because that's what uni has become a kind of 18-30 holiday. When you've got a few more responsibilities ie a job to hold down, others depending on you you'll see drinking for what it is.

So basically your argument is that people should not drink because drinking is fun, and too much fun is bad for you.

I don't really need to drink alcohol, so therefore I won't. Simply put.

Too much fun can be a bad thing. Do you agree?

Actually, no, I don't agree at all. Not unless it negatively impacts some other aspect of your life, which moderate alcohol consumption doesn't.

Within that stipulation, there is no such thing as "too much fun".

Yeah, I agree.
If you have an essay due next Friday, and you're too busy having fun and not working enough, you'll end up either not submitting any work or making a poor last-minute effort of it. This would result in a bad grade, which then may affect your overall grade, and so on and so forth. xD

So, obviously, too much fun can be a bad thing, if it somehow affects you in another way.

I suppose you can't go wrong if you're sensible. I just imagine it to be very difficult to be sensible, when the temptation to go wild is there. Hmm. Especially when you've had one drink, so you feel a bit tipsy, so you'll drink another, and another... Doesn't your judgement become more impaired with each drink, so you'll eventually end up drinking more than the recommended amount?

Also, I'm not an expert on this, so maybe you can tell me. If a man drinks the maximum number of units of alcohol, how drunk can he become? Like is it enough to feel a 'buzz' or is it barely enough to get going? (Men and women have slightly different recommended allowances, if I remember correctly.)

What am I wrong about? OP mentioned that people get drunk and start to be vulgar so I highlighted that. Many people drink occasionally and go to the gym, they do sports and they have a balanced diet.

I found the opposite. The reward of going out and relaxing with a beer motivated me to work harder. I found that generally at university the people who drink the most, also got the best grades.

No, not really. If I drink more than I intend to, I have no way of getting home anymore. Most drinks start to make you feel sick and tired when you have had too much, so that makes you stop drinking and go to bed. Its like an in-built moderation mechanism.

It depends on the man. For most people, there is a big gap between getting a happy buzz - which can happen after one mouthful - and becoming tipsy - which can take 5/6 pints or so. So most people drink 2-3 pints in one sitting. That's about 1-2 hours of convivial conversation in the pub.

The maximum weekly recommended intake is roughly 2 pints a night or so. So you could have 2 pints every night and get a very gentle buzz, or 5 pints 3 times a week and get a bit bigger buzz, or 14 pints once a week and get a huge buzz, and probably be sick. This is the most stupid way, in my opinion.

Yeah, you see, I'd be quite worried about getting home and doing it safely too. :bawling:
I can only relate in that when I have a bar of chocolate, I feel like it's enough and I don't have to have anymore. But I don't feel sick, just satisfied with the amount that I've had. Yikes, though. It sounds scary and something that I'll never quite be ready for. Being hungover is a classical complaint as well, which I don't want to have.

Binge drinking is obviously quite dangerous and not a great idea. Yeah.

But whenever I have a sandwich, piece of chocolate, glass of juice, dessert (or just anything nice), I enjoy eating/drinking slowly and get a buzz of my own. :giggle: It's also fun to talk with friends while eating/drinking all of these things. It's almost superfluous to go the extra mile really, when I am happy enough. :s-smilie:

Hmm, okay, so the amount needed varies a lot between different people.

When people are drunk, I'm guessing they don't talk about very serious topics (e.g., synthesis of ATP as a random example. :teehee:)
What do drunk people talk about when they're drunk?

People also reveal secrets and stories they normally wouldn't reveal because of shyness. So, overconfidence might be a problem of its own (regretting what you said the next morning kind of thing?)

You see what happens...OP didn't ask or state that, OP asked "why" do people drink alcohol....(attention to detail )..and I think we kinda established that the answer is without being tranquilised they can't function socially... the real question is why can't people feel uninhibited...thats probably because of the society we live in (still quite twisted/ victorian), but that's another issue.

yeah tbh yeah i mean i did get drunk last night so
Depends. I see nothing wrong with stuff in moderation, but what I can't wrap my head around is the idea that people think getting absolutely hammered is fun. I've heard people at uni talking about how they got smashed, vomited everywhere and had a hangover, and how fun it was. Personally, I don't really see the point in chugging random colourful shots until you puke or black-out; in fact, if that's your idea of fun, then you're a ****ing nutter. I don't drink, but I get why people might have a couple beers at a pub/bar.

....thought it was "hair of the dog" again.
In a war between alcohol and endorphins I wager endorphins would win.
people on tsr are so unbelievably narrow minded, anything that goes against your opinion/ understanding is suddenly stupid/ ridiculous. its hilarious.

Have you tried it?
Alcohol tends to lower your inhibitions which is one of reasons as to why they would drink it.
I don't drink 'cos I find drunk people annoying and I don't like the idea of losing any control over myself. However, most people are fairly repressed and like that they can blame all the crap they do on the alcohol. I'd rather just be annoying when sober. It's fun
