At work today, we have a woman who is in our store every saturday morning, we pay her to make balloons and facepaint for customers with little kids. I talked to her for the first time today and she said something homophobic to me ("it's just wrong to be gay" :wink:

I wanted to smack her... I do not tolerate homophobia at all and especially not at work.

What should I do? She is not a normal employee she is almost like a 'contractor' person I guess.

Do you work at McDonalds by any chance? She is entitled to her opinion and she is entitled to express it by virtue of free speech. If you don't like it don't talk to her.

Okay but won't you need proof if you want any kind of action being taken? If you don't have proof it will be pointless reporting it because she will just deny it. If she loses her job because of it she will likely become even more homophobic. Do you really want that? It was probably just a slip of the tongue, I'm sure you've said nasty things in the past without thinking about it.

It is an 'opinion' but it is rude and unnecessary to say and stupid comments like that should be kept to herself. Really should have gave her a good telling off.

Yeah you should report her, most companies have policies that dont tolerate racism/homophobia/etc so Im sure this wont just be overlooked if you report it. Give the bitch a lesson.

when she said it, i was just stunned, gobsmacked that someone would say that to my face and at work. so I asked what she meant, and she just repeated herself.

also she works here 2 hours a week i'm sure she will live. I don't care if she becomes more homophobic or whatever. that's her problem not mine.

as for proof, one of my friends (colleagues) was in the conversation with us.

I don't think she would need explicit proof. There is no reason she would make up a story about some random person at work (one whom she doesn't even know personally) making homophobic comments to her. The employer will believe her over the woman. As for 'she will become even more homophobic', who cares?

I'm pretty sure OP has never told a person they are disgusting and inferior or wrong after someone told them they are biracial, so no, it wasn't just a slip of the tongue.

Did she in some way treat you differently after you revealed you were gay to her? If not, you haven't been discriminated against. Simple as.

It seems quite confrontational to say that to you after you told her you were gay, but she's still entitled to her opinion.

It is homophobia, but she wasn't trying to openly attack you individually over it or anyone personally.. so I'd say let it go. I think you should have told her that her opinion was outdated and how you feel about it etc. but on this occasion, she wasn't trying to personally attack you so.. it'd be a bit unfair to try get her in trouble over that.
